can trailing ignition affect idle?

i was trying to solve my idle problem (a miss at idle) and got around to checking my timing. my knock sensor is dead so the ECU was retarding the timing 5 degrees, so i advanced it and got it back up to 0 degrees. then, just for ***** and giggles, i checked the trailing timing... i got nothing on either wire...
could this be my idle problem?

I don't really think so. In the past for grins I've pulled the trail plugs off and you can't tell the difference AT ALL. At least on my cars that's true.
