I can't answer for RETed on this obviously, but the reason I have a fuse right near the battery is incase of a short between the battery and the front of the car. I however don't have a second one that close to the alternator. But there is definite merit in having a fuse very close to the battery.. A shorted out 2AWG wite grounding to the floor pan of a car for instance can create enough heat to start a fire pretty easily..

Hmmm...can I ask why?
Does it have something to do with the somewhat unstable output the alternator throws out?

I admit, I installed the front CB due to convenience rather than rule-of-thumb (is there one?).

ok i just had a thought....

in this image i have it drawn that i will splice the wire at the starter and run one to the starter and the other to the fuse box.... should i run two seperate wires like the stock setup? i will be using 2 guage wire of course, but i would like to use a smaller wire such as the stock size to go to the fuse box after the splice.... what do you think?

Sorry i'm a bit slow today.. Trying to write up a report for a lecture later on today..

Your asking me why you really should have one close to the battery?
Because if you didn't and for whatever reason someone/thing cut into the main 2awg wire comming from the battery between the battery and the front main fuse box, it would create one hell of a lot of heat if/when it grounded, enough to weld the wire to the car body.. Trust me which would start a fire if it was anywhere near anything combustable.. Not a particularly good look.

haha, ignore me for now - pain in my shoulder is making me see weird things.

I thought you said it wasn't recommended, but after I had reread it, that was not the case.

I think in my incomplete write-up, I mention welding supply shops - this is your cheapest bet.

Else, Parts Express sells audio grade cable...

Coincidently, I finished relocating my Battery just last week...I didn't follow RETed's write-up to a tee. I did however, use one 200 amp Phoenix Gold Circuit Breaker though.

I used all 2awg wire. I ran one to the Starter, one to the Main Fuse (opposite side of the 80 amp I ran to the Alternator) and finally the other was used as a dedicated one for the Distributor Box for misc stuff. ie. LT-8 Fuel Pump Relay, Crane Cams Ign Box, Flex-A-Lite #150 etc.

The Breaker (which connects to all 3 wires) Is placed 3" from the positive post.

Theres mine. I bought a 0 gauge amp install kit off eBay and the battery terminals off ebay. I spent maybe 50 dollars on the amp kit, it came with like 40 feet of 0 gauge wire and that giant fuse holder. The battery terminals are awesome. They have direct wire for 0 gauge, 4 gauge, and two 8 gauge wires.

If you get a short while the engine is running, isn't there potential to hurt the alternator?

The breaker closest to the alternator in the diagram (left side) is the one I was thinking about...Since there is already a breaker at the battery, it should trip should the long connecting wire become shorted...The breaker at the alternator probably won't trip due to the fact that the alternator will not be able to provide enough current to trip it. Not sure what current your breakers are rated for, but presuming they need to handle the current draw of the starter, the current the alternator produces is about 1/4 of that.

No reason not to have it, but I don't really see a reason to have it (besides redundancy, that is).

Oh, It's on the way. I'll have Aaron take some pics of the whole anchaloda (something I've been meaning to have done for a while now ). Tomorrow we port followed by rebuild the next weekend thereafter. I hope I'm ready In time for the Ottawa meet.

No pics as of yet. My whole objective was to have It as clean of an Installation as possible. I also followed the hardcore route by drilling over 50 1/4" holes on the front wall of the Battery enclosure (opposite of the passangers seat rear. It was quickly covered with the stock carpet after.

IMO, It allows for more cooling awhile still appearing stock. Atleast thats my take on It.
