can slow rev. cant gun it. stops at 4 if punched to the floor
finally got my 88 vert running with a 87 engine. ideals at 1500, but easily can be at 800. has great compression and sounds vary smooth. i can slowly rev it up to 8000 but if i punch it hard it will rev fast till 4k than bounce from 4k to 3800 over and over.
maybe vacuum leak.
or clogged injector.
AFM, or TPS?

hmmm no offense, but english man!
anywho...the idle is supposed to be set to 750 + or - 25 to that number. so between 725-775. so might want to look into adjusting it.
as far as the hesitation, it depends. if it is the 3.8k hesitation, then it has something to do with the electrical grounds. no harm in checking them anyway.
i had a problem similar to this actually. i could rev all the way to redline but the second i went WOT, it would stall. turns out the afm door wasnt really opening. and the sensor on it was broken.
if you download the FSM, you can do a test on the AFM to see if it ohms out correctly which will let you know that the sensor on the AFM is actually working correctly.
search for "3800 rpm hesitation" to find out more about it and how people fixed it.
if its not the grounds, and you think it might be the injectors, everyone will tell you to take them off the car and have them professionally cleaned and rebuilt. witchhunter.com is what everyone recommends.
another thing, dont s4 fc's red line at 7k? i know mine does.
goodluck with this.

I had a similar problem on a vert. After checking the fuel system with close attention to the injectors and o-rings and gromets that seal them, and also checking the electrical system including the tps, afm and all that. I found the peoblem to be in the 20 year old stock exhaust. The catalitic converters had been keeping the engine exhaust from exiting properly. After reeming them out the car ran fine. I would check the fuel system and the electrical system first, but your problem could be in the exhaust if it is an old stock system.
Hope this helps and good luck fixing the problem.
