can a S4 engine be put in a S5 car? need to know ASAP!!!!!

I have yet to get my title situation cleared up and now I have found a guy with a 90 with no motor or tranny but with a good body and title in good shape. He has told me he would pull out the motor & tranny in my 88 and put it in the 90 in trade for the my car.

I would have his 90 with my S4 motor and he would have my S4 Vert with no motor and tranny. He wants the car to do another V8 swap. He already has one and wants a soft top.

SO what neither of us know is if the S4 will be able to hook up to the S5 body and stuff.

Of course the ECU will have to be swapped to but what else will I need?

If it will not work then I will have to figure out something else.

I just need to know really fast because I am without a car and he will do it but we need to know if it will be a problem.

Mike

If you can transfer the harnesses & ECU with the engine, that'll solve most of your problems...I think some guys had problems with the S5 sensors feeding the S4 gauges though...Try a search- we go through this about twice a week...

I think I found the answer and it is not worth the effort I dont think. I may be able to find a S5 motor and still get it all done.

I would prefer the S5 over the S4 vert.

Actually, I think the problem occurs when people try to plug S4 ECUs into S5 cars. The pinouts are different. Its not really related to the gauges.

That's why I said "the harness AND the ECU"...I think he wants to put an S4 engine in an S5 body, so, if the S4 harness & ECU go with it, shouldn't be any problems with the pinouts, right? We have had no less than 2-3 threads in the past couple a days where guys with S4 water temp senders were having trouble with the S5 gauge cluster, or vice-versa...

Okay, what gauge on the cluster does the ECU acutally control?

Secondly, you can run an S4 motor in an S5 car with an S5 harness and ECU. But thats besides the point.

You must have misunderstood, I wasn't talking about the ECU going to any gauges, I was talking about the hard times guys are having running S4 temp senders with S5 gauge clusters...BTW, you still haven't answered my question about the ECU's internal tach signal, since you seem to be the ECU pro

What internal tach signal? The ECU gets its signal(s) from the CAS, the TACH (on the dash) gets its signal from the trailing coil pack. So why dont you explain to ME what this signal is....

Listen carefully- the ECU fires up the secondaries at 3500, if everything's working right- How does it know the engine's doing 3500??? From the CAS? From the coil triggering outputs?

Okay sir,

Lets go ahead and get this out of the way then.

The ECU takes the signal from the CAS, and generates the ignition signals. One for the leadings and 2 seperates for the trailings. This signal is then sent to the trailing coil. The signal timing is the same as the timing that the tach sees. The tach gets its signal from the trailing coil off of a signal that the ECU generates. So how would the ECU not know that its at 3800 and to go to 4 injector operation, seing as it generates the very same signal the tach uses?

*EDIT*

Okay, I see where your going with this. Indirectly speaking the ECU does control the TACH through the timing signal. However the TACH gets its signal from the trailing pack, not the ecu.

Now lets get back to the thread.

Sounds good to me...Just a question that popped in my head while I was tinkering with the secondaries the other day. Thanks, and like I said- sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread

Plans have changed.

I am going to trade straight up for the 90 . my non running vert for his 90 with no motor & trannie.

He is also going to help me get my title & registration figured out on my other vert.

after I get it done I will sell it so I can get a motor & trannie for the 90 and drive it.

thanks for the help.

I do this just fine, s5 GXL w/s4 sensor and it works just fine.
