Can I swap rear seat for storage boxes?

I've got an '89 TurboII (nearly 2 weeks now and really enjoying it) - I'm never gonna use those rear seats and I heard some models came with storage instead.

Is it a straight swap, if so, what are they like (are they big enough for a helmet?) and what happens to stop luggage form the boot (trunk) joing me up front?

Cheers

I think I'd rather have the seats... I go shopping with my friends a lot (meaning more than one friend ) and having the seats there would mean the groceries wouldn't slide around as much... also, you can have a rear strut bar without losing as much cargo space (at least when the seat is up).

oh yeah, and people can sit in the seats :p

Fixed.

Seriously, though, storage boxes save some weight, probably, but not much room. They are, however, conveniently placed and can more safely store something than just tossing it in the trunk.

And I have had people in my back seat, though no one over 5'3" yet.

I've fit four people in my 2+2.

I'm 6'8, my girlfriend is 5'6", one of my friends is 5'9" and the other is 5'11".

My girlfriend drove with the 5'11" friend behind her, the 5'9" guy sat behind me, and I sat in front with my head sticking out the sunroof.

I've got storage buckets and wouldn't mind a straight up trade for seats.... Think it's possible to cut the seat in half, reupholster it, and just have one seat in the rear, like a rumble seat? My battery's kinda mounted behind me so I can't fit a full rear seat, and since I'm so tall noone could sit behind me anyhow... Even if it doesn't work I'll sell you my storage bins. I don't have the carpet though; it was too ratty to keep. Plus I don't know if it's a straight bolt-in affair. The bins mount to the floor with several bolts which I don't know if they'd be there in your chassis.

All you need to put the storage bins in any FC is the bins, the rear carpet, and the black supports that the bins bolt too. My car didn't have anything in the back, but I just swapped in storage bins a few weeks ago. Very easy and straight forward.

Well that answers that question. There's a little light that goes in the bins too and I have the wires for that, but if you wanted to wire it up you'd have to add wiring since it goes through the harness and I'm not ready to weed it out of my taped-up wiring yet.
