Can I compression test engine without starter?
I have recovered my old burnt car.. and there is a starter on it but I am unsure of jumping it from the starter.. (batt directly to starter) So can i turn the engine and get a good compression idea out of it? Theres not much left of the car.. thanks guys!

Maybe, but not really... compression is directly related to the rotational speed of the engine, and the stock figures are calibrated for abut 200 (250?)rpms.
I don't even know if you could even check for evenness of the pluses since your method of turning it would be so inconsistant.
It's very easy to jump from battery to starter.
Take the negative from the battery and attach it to the engine block anywhere.
Jump the two terminals on the starter with a wire. Take the positive from the battery and touch either terminal on the starter- it'll crank right up. It's the only way to do it right.
