no i have a short somewhere else in the car that is seems to be killing everything

 

I have driven without an alternator a couple times when belt has snapped on me and had to make it home. Can actually last quite a while if you do not use your headlights or stereo or anything like that. Not sure how long it will last if you say you have a short somewhere that is killing everything though.

 

Yes you can start a car w/out an alternator w/out any trouble. BUT I do hope you have a high capacity on the battery (read the reserve capacity/time...that'll tell you how long you can run w/out the alternator). Mine is rated at 100min.
