Can anyone explain oil control rings to me?

I've been doing boatloads of searching and im really curious

How do they work? Specifically what is the sigificance of the springs, the notches and whatnot.

Whys it so important to make sure its all lined up and the springs are on the correct side?

The oil control rings, keep oil traveling up and down the E shaft from finding way in the combustion chamber. The springs purpose are to keep tension on the steel parts keeping combustion process out of the oil and sustaining copmpression...

Why the springs have to be placed on one side only is beyond me, I have put together a few motors and never had any problems putting used springs in either side?

The rationale behind putting the springs in a certain direction has to do with the rotation of the rotors. Installing the springs properly will lock them into place - otherwise, they could spin around in the groove they fit into and wear out prematurely.

The rotors themselves are filled with oil to cool them - that's why rotors are hollow. The oil control rings keeps the oil and the combustion process separate.

So the rings are NOT supposed to spin then? This is all confusing . I searched and founda post where the guy said if they DONT rotate they will burn and get ruined?

No, No. The rings have to rotate along with the rotors. The tension the springs exert is not that great that it prevents rotation, just enough to maintain a seal. If the oil seals did not rotate, why would there be tracking marks on the side plates?

Go to this thread https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=108776 then look for HAILERS and the jpg he attached to the post. SEe. The rings do not spin in the groove. Factory service manual jpg. If the paint is gone, then install the springs as shown in the picture so they will not rotate.
