Can an 88 RX7 beat a C5?
My friend is trying to tell me that his 1988 RX7 beat a C5 from 60mph roll up to 100mph.
I don't want to make him feel bad, but general intuition tells me its :bs
His Rx7 is stock, except no cat converters.

A C5 will run in the 13s stock right? If he has no cats meaning a full exhaust system I guess he could get in the 13s maybe(big maybe), but he would need a FCD too. So basically its BS and if his car is an NA straight....

No stock RX-7 will do that no matter what year it is.
If his 1988 is a TII, and it's modded then it's possible.
I bet the C5 driver just punched it in whatever gear he was already in (probably top gear), and your friend downshifted to giver hard, so that's why he could do it. Even doing that in an NA, you're still not coming close to the C5 at all.

I beat a C5 before in my 88 TurboII. I had full 3" mandrel bent exhaust with 2 Magnaflows (one smaller and made to look like a cat), GSL-SE secondaries, HKS pop-off valve set at 11 psi, FCD mod, K&N filter with intake hose from Datsun Turbo (2.5" at one end and 3" at the other to fit my turbo and my AFM), bronze clutch and Nitto drag radials plus no A/C and a manual rack. My car ran good with this setup, probably low low 13s but not very reliable. Latter I added Haltech F9, MSD, Magnacore plug wires but I only dynoed 220 rwhp and 205 rwtq at 10.5 psi because my turbo was completely shot. I beleive this setup is capable of 240 rwhp and high 12s tuned and driven properly. Not bad for stock motor, turbo and intercooler. Even so I had very hard time beating 97+ C5s if I didn't shift perfect or in the daytime. Even convertibles run 13.4 and make 290 rwhp and they're all automatic.

OKay launching is just dumb to do on the street not to mention it gets cops attention alot more that from racing on a roll, and launching good and hard is not very good for our cars since they have IRS, unless you've beefed up your driveline components I would'nt be launching my car everytime I wanna race, unless is at the track where if something break you have time to fix it for call a tow truck, and your not stuck in the middle of traffic..

No way man its a c5 those cars are fast stock believe me. Listen the only way is to have your car very modified id say intake, exaust, injectors, FMIC, fuel managment, Haltech, ignition, and either a good running stock turbo or an upgraded turbo and lets see how much money is that... i dunno like 6k or so maybe more depening on your turbo. So id say unless youve spent some money on your baby you wouldent be able to beat him plus i feel that even with these mods he would have to be totally stock to beat him
You know this would be A LOT closer if it was a FD
But hey to each their own
Good luck dude!!
Oh yeah and guys one interesting thing id like to point out is look how much less one can spend on a car making it faster than a 40k+ vette? Ive always loved that fact about our cars

Haven't we ALL heard this
Dude, you can to downshift at 60mph to third and make it silky smooth. Not terriably hard on the car if you rev match. When I rev match it you cannot tell I have done it execpt the engine is at 5000 rpm. 3rd gear redlines at about 90mph. That is where all the fun happens
And about the c5. Yeah right. It would be intresting though.

Possible...
If the person driving the C5 doesnt know what they are doing.

well i know i raced a c5 from abuot 65 to 130. i was dead even with him till i had to get to 5th gear around 125 or so, i know i really wound 4th out. the only thing to make my car faster is a racing beat exhaust, hks air filter, an fcon and an fucked up boost controller that wasnt working right.

i was just on my way home from woodward on i-75 when i passed this vette. he sped up to my speed then i slowed down to see if he wanted to race and then i down shifted to 3rd at like 65 or so. then the vette punched it then i got in it he pulled me to his door, then i started to climb up on him till i had to shift to 4th, we were dead even through 4th then i had to shift to 5th and he started to pull me i think i took 4th out to like 7800 or so.
