calling Non turbo gurus

I recently got another rx-7 since my last one i had sold. I had a bad idle so i set the tps, and adjusted the idle airscrew till it idle pretty good. I also celaned the BAC. It idled decent. But when driving on the highway in 4 or 5 gear its like it has no power, its at like 2500-3000 rpm crusing and when i hit the gas a bit its like it doesn't have the power to accerate. it ran kinda like it had a miss. So tonight i put new plugs in it. who ever onwed it before me was a dumb ***. The trailer plug was a normal rx-7 plug but the leadings were normal autolite plugs. luckly the thread and the end was as long as the normal plug, so that the little end didn;t hit the apex seal. So i was liek that had to have been my problem. But when i was driving it home it still didn't have the power it should. I'm also not sure if one of the 6th ports is opening at all, the one towards the back of the motor looks like it has been moving in and out, but the front one looks like it doesn't move much at all.
The car was no cats but had the split air pipe routed into the pipe where it would be if there were a cat there.
Anyone know what else i could check or what might be the problem. i'm thinking maybe mass air flow meter sticky, possibly, cause it throttle repsone almost feels like what a piston motor's throttle respone is when its mass air flow meter is dirty.

any help appericate.

Joe

if it cuts out and feels like it might stall when it feels like no power or bucks like a horse then it could very well be your afm... have you done a basic tune up? fuel filter change 4 new spark plugs, recheck tps, set BAC idle again, ect ... if youve done all that then pull the afm off and test it to spec, but if it just feels slow most of the time then im sure its your ports.... wouldnt hurt to pull the manifold and just clean them for peace of mind... i soaked mine in castrol superclean overnight and they were spotless, wire brushed the block where they went in and relubed it on install, never had a problem again and the car felt a world different..... id do it for peace of mind like said, then if the problem persists then you know it is a mechanical or electrical gremlin with the motor

I've done pretty much the whoel basic tune up except the fuel filter. I will check the afm(air flow meter) today. What should the afm specs be? and to remove and clean the 5thand6th ports what all do i need to remove to get to them?

fuel filter is a pretty important part of the tune up... change that first and see what it does... a clogged fuel filter can present most of the problems you describe... the specs for the AFM are listed in FSM downloaded for free at www.iluvmyrx7.com under your year model and such. have you ever removed all the manifolds from the block? if your not comfortable with that then you might want to find somebody to clean the ports... otherwise make it a learning exp... you have to remove everything down to the block itself and then they come out... sometimes if stuck you have to really pull to get them out... its a job but once you do it once you learn so much and will never have a problem pulling it all apart again, just make sure you have another car to drive in case y ou run into some problems and its down for a bit longer than you think

do a 60k tuneup and come back, no one will have a real answer for you until you do that...

plugs, wires, all fluids, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, adjust tps...the basic stuff you would do to any car.

MY CAR HITS A WALL AT 140...i cant seem to accelerate much past that???

yeh fuel filter is next up. Pulling the motor aprt is no biggie for me i'm a mechanic at local shop, just wanted to make sure it was the whole intake manifold. As for the 60k yeh the fuel filter is the only thing i hadn't done.

140 hits wall lol thats great man

if your going to pull the manifolds you should look into removing the emissions as well, get a egr blockoff plate and simplify all the vac lines... i only had 3 vac lines on my entire motor after i did my emissions... makes it so much easier to work on after you do that, just depends on what all your plans are for the car

When I had my auxilary ports stuck closed, it definately felt around 4k that I hit peak torque and then everything just fell off. The car was struggling pretty hard to make it to redline, although it did get there.

When my plugs and wires needed replacing it was just a stumble, like a hesitation around 6k under WOT. Around town it would occasionally stumble around 4k (although a different feel from when the 6 ports were closed) but it was nowhere near as drastic.
