Calling all '86 and '87 RX-7 Sport owners

Hey what's up my fellow Sport owners? I have this weird fasination with the Sport packaged base models, I just think they are badass! I was thinking we should make an RX-7 Sport only picture thread.

Here's my car, the pic is pretty good, it was taken by Jose at the Apple Blossom Festival this past April. My car is the 4th from the left in the second row. My license plate says "KROOSN" if that helps. Sorry, but that is the only pic I have currently, when I get a camera I will make many more, trust me.

http://www.rotaryrx7.com/AppleBlossom2002/index.html

A few facts about my car:
-Original paint
-82,000 Original miles
-I'm the second owner, the first owner was a lady
-I have every receipt for the car since the day it came off the boat, literally.

Happy motoring,
Isaac

I have this weird fasination with the Sport packaged base models

They are not base models. Series 4 Base models have tiny single piston brakes, tiny sway bars, no spoilers, 14 inch wheels, etc.

They are sport models with all the extra crap left out and the good go fast stuff put on. Like the 4 piston brakes, sport tuned suspension (same suspension as on the T2), the aero kit which lowered the Cd to a low .29.

The model is technically a GS.

There is nothing base about a Sport/GS!

The GS/Sports are the most pure sports car FC models ever built. Sports don't even have the extra fancy carpet and padding, and mouse belts that the GTUs models have.

Looks like a great meet:

Wish the pictures came out better (those $0.99 disposable cameras suck).

Although I think the Sport should have been a seperate model, they were not. They were an option package that basically kicked ***. I think the '88 GTU is the only model that came close to challenging the Sport's crown as the NA ultra-sports model.

Isaac

P.S. Where are all the other Sport owners on here?

I'm an '86 sport owner. The car was bought with blown motor and to my surprise all the records were in the glove box, including the original window sticker.

Check that window sticker I posted... under model, you'll see GS. That is a separate model. The base models were S, and the Luxury/SE models were the GX.

BUT comparing the 88 GTU is quite fair either, because it had the heavy upgraded carpet and the extra sound deading and padding from the GXL. Now the 88 GTU came with an LSD, which would have been nice to be standard on the Sport. But the extra 100 lbs of niceties on the GTU does make it a second or third choice.

Yo,

I protest!! *grin* Just 'cause the Gubment made Mazda put in the mouse belts doesn't mean the GTUs isn't the king of NA's!!

Don't get me wrong, I dig the Sports. If I was going to get a S4 FC, it'd be a Sport.

A few questions about 'em:

Manual or power windows?

Tilt steering wheel?

LSD?

Aluminum hood?

Rear wiper?

I still think the GTUs is the hardest core, but I'm biased. I know the Sports are a lot lighter than the GTUs, but the GTUs has the more powerful 13B.

Fill me in on the Sport info...

Nope only manual, also only had manual mirrors, not those heavy motorized ones like found on the GTUs

Tilt steering wheel?
Nope only locked for less weight.

LSD?
Optional

Aluminum hood?
My 87 sport had an aluminum hood, but I hear that Mazda switched back and forth on what cars got them in 86 and 87.

Rear wiper?
Nope... what are you thinking??? Only luxury cars need a rear wiper, because they are going slow enought to care what behind them.

I still think the GTUs is the hardest core, but I'm biased. I know the Sports are a lot lighter than the GTUs, but the GTUs has the more powerful 13B.

Stock, my 87 Sport commonly did a 7.1 second 0-60 (almost a whole second faster than a 86 GXL and less than a half second slower than the 6.7 seconds of the T2 at the time). Weren't all the series 5 cars at least a 8 second 0-60???

whoops forgot a couple of other thing... like ultra-lightweight german jack and tire changing tools.

again the famed aero kit which lowered the drag to .29 Cd instead of the .31Cd of a non spoilered FC and the .325Cd of the GTU style spoilered vehicles.

And even though it was an option I have yet to see a sport without the tall center consol arm rest.

Yo,

Optional LSD?! Ha! Purest sports FC with an /optional/ LSD? Sometimes aluminum hood, sometimes not? You probably could get a factory installed sunroof!! Will this travesty ever end?! *grin*

I'm just kiddin'. The Road & Track 0-60 for the GTUs was...8.6 seconds. *cough* 1/4 mile was 16.7 @ 84.5 mph. *hack* Um, yeah.

*grin*

Oh I also forgot the Speed sensitive power steering was standard, rather than the engine speed power steering found on the GTU and GTUs.

Yo,

I see, totally ignore my jibes. The ugly rumors are true then: you could get a factory sunroof on the Sports. Sacrilege!

Yes you could get a factory sunroof, I have a glass one. Not too much of a weight gain there, and I think second gens look just plain weird without sunroofs.

kind of off topic: Am I the only one that thinks the mariah rear spoiler looks like crap? That thing is freakin huge. Its probably the worlds most effective spoiler but I wouldnt buy it. Looks really weird to me. Id rather have a GT wing or something. Im sure if mariah only made that wing for honda/acuras, alot of people would call it "rice" and ugly and put all those puke smileys. Again this is just MY OPINION.

Of course of course...All in fun.

And yes you could get a factory sunroof, although mine thankfully didn't have it; as you can see from the window sticker I posted. Air condition was also an option as was floor mats, high arm rest, a tape player, LSD (on the 87 models), dealer installed cruise (of course the dealer could add that to any FC without cruise) and dealer installed EQ.

I do have a lot of respect for the 89-90 GTUs, and that would be my 2nd choice if I was buying another FC. The GTUs has that nice large 18 gal gas tank too.

Yo,

Hee! Ya, I'm just playing. I can't let your grandiose statement about the Sport being the purest FC go unchallenged!! My vote still goes to the GTUs for being the purest of purpose.

Have you ever thought of coming to one of the Sacramento events? We kind of have an off again on again thing going on with the Sac Sevens. I want to check your car out! Do you have any pics of your car?

BTW, which Samurai Jack episode where he is fighting all the mechanical bugs? He keeps killin' and killin' 'em, and when one finally takes a step back he says:

"No. There is no escape."

And proceeds to work the rest. Too cool.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That spoiler is way big for me, it just looks strange. I know the guy Brad with the 20B, and he told me that Mariah said the wing is effective. I rode in the car and I don't care either way, that mother has torque!

My digital camera died, and I haven't bought a new one yet, so I only have a couple of shots done with my web cam and laptop. I'll get some more , clean them up and put them on my website, when I finish the series 5 stuff. I keep wanting to get out to some of the local events, but my schedual has been very busy. Maybe in september when I finish my book and my daughter is back in school.

I think that was episode 3. He saved the canine race in that one as I recall. The first season is supposed to be available on DVD this fall. They even have action figures now:

I have a 86RX-7 Sports Package
Original owner 14 mile on odometer from dealer.
Car has 140k mile on it. Only mod done is upgraded exhaust to Greddy Extreme 80mm and intake K&N filter.
Most of the electronics I had to resolder boards because of cold solder joints from factory. No rust and always garaged. Thinking of installing ported motor when original gives up. She still can climb over 100MPH handles great. Installed front and rear tower bars and short shifter.
Major repaire done was a 5 speed overhaul from dealer under warrenty. It went in for a noisey through out bearing dealer said it was tranny. They suck they rebuilt it wrong install some bearings wrong lasted only 20k. Ended having it rebuild again from a more reliable shop.

I plan on keep this car till I die. Just purchased her younger brother 93 Touring Dec01. They keep each other company in the garage. Both are only driven under 3k a year.
Daily car is a Expedition. Looking for a 1st Gen all stock no mods prefer FI Rotary say 85 year.
When RX-8 come out I plan on buying one. I want all Gens if I had more garage space. Wife won't let me convert kitchen to RX room.

Glad to see some on with a RX7 Sports.

87 Sport-White/blue int. Short arm-rest, never saw a tall one until a recent junkyard trip.
I prefer the sport spoiler to any other I've seen (factory or aftermarket), but I think a fiberglass version that could be painted to match the body would be really nice.
