Exclamation Is this a call for a rebuild??

Im very new to rotary, but ive done alot of home work, but one thing thats got me is when i started up my car and let it idle for like 10 seconds, there was alot of white smoke, And i mean alot. So i cut it off, and looked at the back, after about another 5 seconds there was still smoke pouring out of the exhaust. I do know the spark plugs need to be changed due to the fact they are not sparking for anything, So is this a rebuild sign?? The smoke smells like fuel.

um, I wouldn't actually say it's a rebuild candidate immediately, but the signs point there.

Make sure it's unburned fuel first.

Check compression, search here, there are MANY guides on how to check rotary compression. You're going to want 100 anything less than liek 80 means instant rebuild.

White smoke generally means you have coolant leaking into the engine, do a coolant system pressure check to make sure that's it. A cheaper alternative way is the "Champagne check," which basically involves checking for teeny bubbles after burping the coolant system.

These are just a couple things you can check. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will pipe in tomorrow morning.

This is what the coolent looks like, nothing but mainly rust from the radiator. Also i pulled the plugs and they are drenched in fuel, and i could smell it as soon as i pulled them out. So could it need just a very very good tune up, or do i need to replace Apex seals. Havent checked the compression yet, gotta find a tester. Also is it smart to wire up an eletric fan and remove the clutch fan?? I have done it on every car i have ever owned (that didnt have one already).

Also the radiator was filled with water, not my doing, i added some radiator fluid, im actually gonna drain it once i find a place to do so

If your fan clutch is blown, that's not a bad idea to replace it with an Efan. Aaeon Cake has an excellant article on it ( http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/efanmyth.htm ) read up. In fact, I recommend you read everything on his site related to 7's.

There was no bubbles in mine, i checked it 3 times and still no bubbles. But im just gonna call it a rebuild and get ether a street port or a turbo2 and call it done. It will crank right up everytime and fill the yard with smoke and it idles really high like 2000-3000 rpms at idle.

If you squeeze the hose, you'll get bubbles.. that just means you aren't burped properly. Search the forums.

Again, I'm not saying you are not in for a rebuild, just that it could be something else.

The white smoke is a huge coolant leak indicator though.

I drove all summer with white smoke at start up and 60psi on the rear rotor. If it drives fine after warm up then drive it.

The idle is normal on cold start up. Start in gear i think, and then rev a little and it drops right away

That's called Mazda's Accellerated warmup sequence or something like that, I don't recall exactly what it's called but it's used to quickly build oil pressure and increase engine temps faster than say.. 800rpm would. Don't try to get around it, it's helpful. After liek 20 seconds or so it'll drop down to 1500, then it *should* lower to 800-1000 rpm, depending on your settings.

On short trips (<10minutes) my idle never drops below 1500rpm. On anything past 20 minutes, it'll stay around 850. It just depends on how warm your engine is.

Ok, so anyone have a complete wiring harness for the N/A?? this one was butchered and alot of the connectors are spliced and its really annyoing, cuz something is draning the battery and im assuming its something to do with the harness. I dont have a radio or cd player or a light that stays on all the time.

A coolant leak that leaks into the chambers? With a rebuild. However, there are varying types of rebuilds. If your internals aren't rusty, pitted, or otherwise damaged, you may only need to replace the soft seals in the motor. BUT, depending on the vehicle's condition, mileage, what you want to do with it (DD? track? strip? all the above?) you may want to do a complete rebuild and even change things around. The possibilities are endless.
