CAI....in the making...

ok so i posted this in reply to that other intake....what do you think thread, but i thought it would get more attention if i posted up one of my own seperate posts, since i plan on doing the same thing....

so this is what i want to know, this sounds like a REALLY dumb question, but what actually makes it a "Cold Air" intake? the piping?

...if thats the case, i have been planning on making an intake (but i was just going to make a heat shield that bolts onto the stock position) and if all i have to do is make that pipe to be able to bend around and sit in the right position from the MAF sensor then i believe i can make them, and it will cost me VERY little, therefore i can sell it for VERY little, i just need to know how to do it/dimensions, and i'll get right on it with making them...can someone explain what/how it needs to be setup to me?

thanks,
chad

The design of them. They go away from the motor down closer to the ground, where cold air rests (hot air rises...).

what if it were to rest in the stock position? maybe a little lower, but in that general open area where the stock intake used to be? would it still be considered a CAI?

there is no way to make a real CAI without cutting up the car. the easy way is to cut out the triangle area of the rad surport and run a 3" pipe through there and mount the filter in the bumper. the other way is to cut out where the washer fluid bottle is and mount the filter infront of the wheel.

Makers of "rice" accessories are partly to blame for your confusion. Any complete set-up that ensures only air from outside the engine bay enters the air filter can be called a "cold air intake". A chrome pipe from the TB or turbo to a filter is not a cold air intake. A pod filter with a hose attached to it's end inlet is not a cold air intake because most of air is still sucked in the exposed filter in the engine bay. A shield around the airfilter with no way for outside air to get to the filter is not a cold air box (despite what Mariah thinks). No one particular part can be called a cold air intake, it is a bunch of parts that have to be designed and built to work properly.
