CA CA Smog ! ! whew ! !

I passed my smog last week and today i went to DMV for registration. Then they told me that they made a mistake and that i need to go to a TEST only center. And so i went with no hesitation.

Test only Center i suddenly failed my 15mph HC measure 118 max and i measured 729.

i have stock 1990 Vert rebuild engine all emissions installed. dual corksport highflow cat and magnaflow exhaust. so i paniced, since last week i just passed my smog.

Anyway to make story short i went to Autobacs and bought me Seafoam and drove back to the smog station. ( i drove close to 1hour back and forth )

and my new HC readings went down to 28 wooohaaa.. whew.

just wanted to share my story. don't know if the seafoam help or my 1 hour driving.

now i can enjoy my vert.. yeeehaaa... =)

Thank you to all the forum members.. Search function in the forum really helps.

1. Autozone, kragen, and etc. It's over by all the other fuel injector cleaner stuff. White can + red lettering.

2.

3.

4. Yes putting the emissions back on is a pain in the ***. If you have all of the stuff in a box and labeled it will make you job easier. Download the emissions section of the FSM and start reading it now. In fact, read it a few times before you get started.

I had a single N1 styled can and i passed. If the motor is rebuilt you should not have any issues as long as the acv, airpump, and cats are still on. My NO and CO were way below passing with no acv and the airpump plumbed directly into the main cat. The HC measured around 350-400 ppm and hooking it all back up like it was stock shot it way down to passing even with a bad main cat. All I can say is if you have not done a tune up recently do it now and make sure the main cat is heated up before you go there.

i have all my emissions on my car. I did a tune up on my car by changing spark plugs and wires, O2 sensor , air filter, fuel filter, oil change, tranny and differential fluid change, brake lines replaced and many more. =) I followed the list that is on the FAQ section. =)

Satanicmechanic is right exhaust will not matter.

good luck on your smog. and drive it for 30 mins on the freeway then go straight to the smog station. use Seafoam to clean out carbon stuff , but then again you just had your engine rebuild.

Pretty much. Sorry about the confusion. I meant spark plugs, wires, air filter, oil, and other stuff like that. If you're really worried about failing you should go and get a test smog that does not send results to the DMV in case you get the gross polluter tag. They'll run the car and give you a printout and you can look in the faq to see what's wrong.

If the car has a rebuilt motor, a recent tune up (as mentioned above), and all the emissions (basically a stock car) you should be OK. There's a lot more stuff involved, of course, but I'd say if you did all that you would be on the safe side. That's what I had and I passed.

Not entirely true. I've done it and not passed. Only had cats and no emissions at the time, but a gallon in a 1/4 will take the hydrocarbons down 100ppm. It's not a bad idea if your only failing by less than that.

I've used it before and not passed, but a friend has used it and passed. I don't think it really does much more than a fuel injector/carb cleaner would do.

You probably need a new main cat.
