A/C Question

My air conditioner compressor in my 87 does not kick on and I know that my first step is to charge the system. Anyone know what is involved in switching to the new freon ?
Do I really need to buy a whole conversion kit or just a couple cans of freon ? Also where is the low pressure side where I need to tap in ? I made the mistake once on another car of choosing the high pressure side and I am still cleaning shorts !!
Thanks

There are quite a few parts that need to be changed as anything with R12 or R22 seals will need to be changed to support the newer freon
