A/C and Overheating

Ok, I'm tired of not having air and I'm needing to find a solution for my A/C problem.

Last summer, I thought I would try to recharge my air system. I first got rid of all the existing stuff inside of the system and started to charge it with R134a coolant. I know that the car used the older Freon which is now illegal, so I tried to switch. I got the "Conversion Kit" from Autozone which includes the oil and r134a. Well, after charging to the correct level, I let my car sit and run for about 10 minutes while I sat in the drivers seat feeling the air watching my gauges. After 10 minutes my car started to heat up very fast and I shut it off immediately. Next thing I know, coolant starts to spill out of my overflow tank. I thought at first it was my thermostat that went bad, but after refilling my coolant and driving around, everything was normal. So I changed my thermostat anyways and tried it again. Again it happened.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm not sure if my A/C pump is dead or not. It did make a whirring sound which makes me think yes so I haven't had a belt on it for a year.
