a/c-heater problem.....help!
well, the winter is coming and i need help. here's the problem.....
the blower on my 86 gxl only starts when i push the right slider all the way to "max" and start the car. if i take the slider off "max" while the car is running, the blower will stop and cant be turned back on, and if i start the car with the sider off "max" and try to turn it on while the car is running, it wont work neither.
any idea? thanks.

Cold solder joints. Remove logicon unit (i.e., the A/C-heater controls). Get to the board inside. Find a wiring diagram to learn which joint you need to resolder, or just resolder them all since the factory soldering job isn't so good anyway. You can also get a new logicon for $200. Be careful not to overheat any of the chips with the soldering iron, or you'll definately need a new logicon.
Mine's been going out and I've been delaying fixing it until the problem gets critical... Only my main vents work and sometimes it gets temporarily stuck on heat if I turn the heater on. Still not bad enough .

if you are somewhat familiar with the whole soldering thing then you will know what a broken solder joint looks like. It is pretty simple to open them up, just ackward. Also your slider track maybe dirty too. Either way, you will need to remove it from the dash and open it up. I got a used one from a track car conversion for $15 on eBay. Look around the for sale section to see if anyone has a working one to sell.

Go to the free, online series five FSM (I know you have a series four), and download section U of that FSM. THERE you will find detailed methods of finding why your fan does not work right when the slider is moved.
Personally, I thnk the power transistor mounted on the fan motor housing is kaput. Just an opinion. Try using the above FSM. It's free.
Similar to the two jpgs I attach to this:
