Question A/C Electrical Prob: Compressor Doesn't Engage, Rough Idle With A/C Button Pressed

btw, I did search...

Is there any problem in running a wire from the battery directly to the compressor?

I do have refigerant in the system... My compressor clutch doesn't engage, but when the a/c button is on, the engine goes to a VERY rough idle. When the button is off, it runs great. Therefore, I don't feel like dealing with an electrical problem unless it's very easy.

I did try running a test wire from the batt to the compressor and the clutch engaged. But when I installed a small switch, the wire started to MELT!? Why is this? What is the voltage and/or current on the compressor supposed to be? 12V right?

Thanks,
Charles

Rough idle with the compressor engaged could be either bad compressor or bad BAC or damaged ECU.

Jumpering wires is a good way to burn the car down and make the problem worse. Too small of a wire or ground on the other side of the circuit would melt the wire.

Fix the car, don't hack it up and make it worse.

The rough idle still occurs even if the compressor is Unplugged. Also, uplugging the BAC doesn't change things.

I did find that if you disconnect the low press switch (near the evaporator), the rough idle will stop. And jumpering the two wires will make it begin again, showing that the switch is working fine, , ,

Does anyone today have any suggestions? Can I set up a switch (with a fuseable link) in my dash to control the a/c directly from the battery?
