A/C clutch won't engage, even when jumped at press SW

Recharging the system after installing the compressor and vacuuming out the system the clutch would not engage on the compressor. I jumpered the low pressure switch on the dryer and the engine picked up speed a bit, but the clutch didn't engage. Jumpering the clutch to the positive terminal engaged the clutch. This makes me think the ECU "saw" me doing this. I've searched and read about the ECU controlling the A/C engagement, but beyond reading just that I haven't found any details. Has anyone dealt with this before getting the ECU to activate the clutch? Anyone else have any ideas?

See if you have voltage at the pressure switch. If you do you need to trace it to the relay. There are a set of relays to the right of the hood latch facing the car its one of the round ones ( there are only two round ones).

I'll second that thought about the RELAY in the front. I've had a bad one of those in the past.

The wires to that relay are: Blue/black, Red/Yellow, Black/White and Blue/White.

Remove the relay and set it aside.

Jumper b/t the Blue/Black and the Black/White. The compressor should pull in if the a/c switch is ON and the ignition key is on.

IF not, check the Blue/Black for batt voltage. It should have it. IF not then the fuse is blown or there is a open in that line. According to the FSM, that fuse is in the interior fuse box. Bottom row, second from your left when looking into the box.
IF the comperssor pulled in, then check the following:

Check the Red/Yellow for 12v which is used to pull the relay in and also a gnd on the Blue/White, also used for pulling in the relay. The Blue/White is a gnd coming from the ECU.

ok. here goes:

The press SW has voltage. when the A/C button is pressed and the press switch is jumpered, the relay clicks and the blue/black and black/white have continuity... so my relay is good. the blue black DOES NOT have 12V, which now I know why the clutch (black/white) is not coming on. I checked the fuse panel and my bottom row left to right is (Heater 30A, Stop 20A, Power St 10A, Sun Roof 15A, Audio 20A)... and all those fuses are fine.

HAILERS, where does the blue/black get its voltage from? I do not have a FSM. Thanks for the help so far please do not stop! haha

^^ FSM is linked in the FAQ in PDF form. I may be off base here, but there is a wire coming from the ECU that is supposed to go to the relay. that might be it. I think it's pin 1F... check FSM chapter 4 (fuel and emission one, I think that's it), p. 32 ish

replaced CIGAR fuse and clutch engages when jumpered. I would have never looked at that fuse otherwise. now my low side valve is leaking so off the the AAP&B for a new valve core. update later. this has some good info, archiveable??

********open in that line. According to the FSM, that fuse is in the interior fuse box. Bottom row, second from your left when looking into *************

The second from your left when looking into the fuse box is the CIGAR fuse. Like I said in the first post. humor

It works!!

haha, but orientation is a bitch... i was going by the bottom based on the fuse cover, second from the left was the stop 20A.... thanks all of you though (except the guy talking about AaronCake). I charged it up and now have coldish A/C... the best I can expect from a 19 year old system i suppose. why do they call the fuse CIGAR?? is that an acronym?

p.s. oh yeah and my clock started working... good news all around today.
