A/C Belt Question

I'm in the process of putting new belts in my '88 Vert and I bought one of the Duralast belts from Autozone for my A/C belt and it seems as if the belt does not sit snug enough between the pulley and the compressor? There's just enough slack that I can start to get my finger between the pulley and the compressor. Does this happen very often with these cheap aftermarket belts or am I missing something? I wasnt sure if I should go back and try to get a different a/c belt or if I should just return it elsewhere and go someplace else for the belt? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Did you adjust the pulley?

There is an idler pulley that is adjustable. It will move up and down to remove the slack.

If the pulley is as far as it can go, I guess the belt is the wrong one. Never had a problem getting a belt for the car.

I've noticed my aftermarket alt belt was hard to get very tight. I could barely get it to spec. But the other ones were fine. If you want to be safe I hear some people say to go OEM for belts. If you think you're doing something wrong, experiment with the old belt and see if you can get that one to tighten.

as turbonut stated- there were 2 different belts for that car. You probably need the shorter belt.
