Question Buying new Convert: Factory rebuilt eng. risks?

Considering buying a '91 vert. Owner says he had a factory rebuilt engine installed (Shipped from Japan). Only 1K on new engine.

I'm a little concerned in that he said that the original engine was "unfixable by Mazda dealer" for a loss of power problem....kinda sounded like the 3800rpm hesitation..but that would be too easy. He mentioned that the mechanics said the CPU was the problem....I didn't get why a whole engine replacement was necessary.

Any major risks buying this vert with the rebuilt engine? How long should I expect a "rebuilt" engine to last? Near new? Selling for $7.8K

Go for it? / Be cautious?

Thanks for the inputs in advance.

If the body is immaculate, and the top is in great shape, MAYBE $7.8K. I have a black vert and a white 94, and I can't tell you how much fun it is deciding which car to drive to work.
IMHO, the convertible was the only really good looking 2nd gen (it is just a real dog compared to the rest of the rotaries). Most people can't even tell what kind of car it is with the top down.
As far as the engine is concerned, if it feels sluggish, get a compression test. I am assuming that the body has ~ 100K. Drive it, check how smoothly it shifts and listen for tranny/rear-end whirs. If it pulls strong and is clean in all the other areas, you will get your fun out of it.
Check the windshield wiper switch to see if it operates correctly, and if the leather is clean (no rips) it a good deal.

I just got a 91 for 6.4K. New top, rebuilt engine 15k on it. There are a few things going amuck. Hay, it's a car.
I also have a 89 with 135k miles on it, still going strong, but burns oil for the first few minutes (oil seals). I put the last 80k miles on it. Drive every day over the Pali.
Living in Hawaii, it is the only way to go.

Where have all the top boot covers gone?? I contacted the 2x owner, he took it to sell on eBay. How bad is that!

Factory engine

My 90 Vert has 40K miles on a factory new engine.
It still is perfect. I think this is a great way to go.
(I had the luxury of having a extended warranty program pay the bill)
Why worry about why it was changed. All you care is if everything is cool right now.

99.9K miles and still going strong

Hey if the engine has good compression, tops in good shape, and the rest of the car looks good go for it.

I paid $3200 US plus $2000 to get it into proper shape

Use the "post reply" button and there's an option to upload a picture to this webiste. Pics are limited to 100K i think.

I host mine on a website and embed/link them from that site here using img VB/html tags, that's why the quality & size looks so good
