Talking Buying a convertible FC..things to look for?

Hey all, I have a line on what seems to be a sweet '91 convert. The engine is going, so I'm not going to spend a bunch of time checking that, but can you all PLEASE give my hints on what to check, what to look for, etc.??? The car has 96k on the odo.

with my convertible, the only things that I can think of that cause problems are the seals around the doors and where the top meets the windows, etc. The power top works great, but just look for weak seals and stuff like that.

Just bought one with 94K miles on it. The TPS had to be replaced (backfiring, decelleration is rough, etc..).

Other than that just did the normal 60K services. Compression on the engine was average but within spec. Why do you believe the engine is shot? I'd have mazda pull the #s for you (make sure the car is warm when they do it and it's a rotary specific compression tester).

Other than that - THE TOP!!!!!. Check for leaks, look behind the seat for obvious water marks. Check it comes with a spare tire. Ask if the owner bought the snap-on-top (it was optional). Make sure it reclines correctly. Take the hard top off and check it, etc..

Look for frame damage (mine had no frame damage, but some panels have obviously been replaced).

Is yours airbag or normal? Is it an automatic or 5 speed?

Thanks...

The guy I'm getting it from is not the first owner, I'm not sure if he's the second owner even. He says the oil seal is leaking/blown, I guess he is referring to the Apex seals? Doesn't matter much to me, as I'm replacing it.

OK, so I'll check the operation of the top (smooth and quiet), look for stained carpet, under the back deck, and of course, operate every switch and lever.

It's a 5-speed, I'd imagine since it's a '91 it's got an airbag, which is probably due for replacement.

I can only HOPE it has the snap-on top.. can those still be bought? How much?

Oh yeah. Mazcare did fix a similar oil leak on mine. Probably similar on yours. Doubt the apex seals are bad. Your local/regional rx7 club can probably recommend an rx7/rotary mechanic in your area to check it out.

Airbag is optional I believe.

Anyone else, please?? What about rust-prone areas??

As for the leak, I'm either swapping in a 13bt, or a 20Bt, so this motor doesn't mean much t me at all...

What is this leak, anyway? I haven't seen the car yet.
