Buying a convertible FC..things to look for?
Hey all, I have a line on what seems to be a sweet '91 convert. The engine is going, so I'm not going to spend a bunch of time checking that, but can you all PLEASE give my hints on what to check, what to look for, etc.??? The car has 96k on the odo.

Hey im in High Point, NC and i drive an 88 vert with 150K, origonal engine still running great. The small things i notice with my car are the security system which only gives teh "im working beep" randomly, but dosnt seam to actually work and the tears in the top at the bottom near the doors, which lead to some wet carpets, but I havnt looked under them to see if any rust formed, but I doubt it, I patched the top with some clear caulking, and the cruize control, it hasnt worked in a long time, but I dont really mind and havnt tried to fix it. Things other people have told me about are the wiper only working on one speed, but I dont have that problem with them. I guess the paint is another thing, mine is very faded especially on the mirrors. I cant think of anything else right now, send me a PM if you have any other questions.
thanks

Wow, it's convertible day. From a similar post (about 5 min ago)

Other than that just did the normal 60K services. Compression on the engine was average but within spec. Why do you believe the engine is shot? I'd have mazda pull the #s for you (make sure the car is warm when they do it and it's a rotary specific compression tester).
Other than that - THE TOP!!!!!. Check for leaks, look behind the seat for obvious water marks. Check it comes with a spare tire. Ask if the owner bought the snap-on-top (it was optional). Make sure it reclines correctly. Take the hard top off and check it, etc..
Look for frame damage (mine had no frame damage, but some panels have obviously been replaced).
Is yours airbag or normal? Is it an automatic or 5 speed?
