Thumbs up Buying a 2gen RX7 any ideas??

hey everyone. I am a newbie in this rotary stuff but I am looking to buy a 2 gen to use for autoxing. I am 16 and need a car that can race on weekends and take me around, be able to make long distance trips. I have decided on a rx7 for its 2+2 seating, price and its performance. can anyone give me websites, advice, anything at all on what to look for when buying a 2 gen. 5 spd RX-7. is a RX-7 turbo a good investment or is it better to stay n/a when buying? well thank you all for your help. hope to see you at the track!

At age 16 I would recommend starting with a NA rather than the Turbo, as well as the T2 (or Turbo) like most RX-7s in the states didn't come with a rear seat.

Once you have had considerable experience driving a more neutral balanced car like an RX-7, then you may wish to move up to a T2.

Remember that RX-7s like most rear wheel drive sports cars are not as forgiving as a front wheel drive economy car like a Honda/Acura to driving mistakes. It will take some wheel time to deal with that.

Rear seat models will be SE and GXL models with the rear seat option. It is reasonably rare.

nate,

Hey welcome to the forum.

As the non turbos go, the GTU and GTU-S are best for autoxing. If you want a good combo of luxury & performance try the 89+ GXL.

For extra reliability I'd recommend getting one that's had a recent rebuild on the motor or has low motor miles. Either that or pick one up for dirt cheap and do the rebuild yourself.

These cars are a blast to drive and after you've gotten good with the NAs you can pick up a Turbo II in a few years for some supercar action.

Even if you find one with rear seats, don't expect anyone bigger than 5 feet or 100lbs to be comfortable back there. I would recommend a GTU to you.

You could always get the back seat for it from here I see them all the time here for sale.

I remember my first one back in 98' I was 18. I bought a GXL (God rest it's soul). If I had to do it over again I would. I just bought a 91' TII and it is a virgin. By the way if you live in the VA area (Norfolk maybe NC)and happen to see a black GXL with ugly blue seats and tinted windows with little no fear dragons on the windows grab that motor it is a turbo motor with less than 30k on it. It has been in the junk yard for a year now.

Well good luck.
