To buy or rebuild? HELP.

Alright, I'm ready to buy my first RX-7! I'm on a pretty tight budget so I need help deciding whether it be best to buy a drivable FC for $1500 or so, or buy one or two f0r $600 total and have it rebuilt. If I buy a drivable FC I won't have any money for the little things that I'm sure will need attention and it WILL break eventually. You never know what you're getting anyway. But if I buy one thats not running but in otherwise good condition, it already broke and I need to get it going. A friend of a friends (yeah I know) is selling an 88 and a 87 in "ok" condition(a few dings and a dent) for $500 locally. The 87 has an engine in it (apex seals went bad of course) that needs rebuilding and a newer transmistion, the 88 has no engine but the tranny's good(both are manual which is what I want).

Or in Miami there's an and 88 (S5 to S4) for $600($1000 with motor), body's great, plus he'd give me a second 88 motor, a copy of the engine rebuild tape and enough parts to build another 88 rx7(I assume he means motor). Rebuilt he's want $1900 but he's busy. Its automatic but is ready for a 5spd to be dropped in, meaning he has the pedal assembly installed and the clutch master cylinder installed and has 2 flywheels and some used clutches. I'm not sure about the interior or the milage yet.

So what do you think? I'm a student on a tight budget, but I've found Rotary Resurrection in Morristown, TN that rebuilds them for $1000, that'd be about my budget there, shipping the core he says should be about 80-100 each way. I'll make some local calls tomarrow (Monday) to see what I can find running.

Help?

buy a decent running RX7 and properly maintain it, buying a project RX7 when you are a student on a tight budget will only cause you problems and put a strain on your wallet and stress on your mind.

Buy a decent running one. I bought my FC a little less than a year ago and it was in decent running condition. I thought the same as you, thinking it would eventually break on me. But here I am today and it still has not given me any big mechanical problems.

Like Karack said, buying a project car is hard to do when on a tight budget. It may even cost more to get a non running FC running than it would have to buy one that already was.
