buy this car?

Hey, I'm new here to the forums but I have absolutely fallen in love with the rotary engine. The way it sounds, the way it moves, its just amazing. I'm looking to purchase a car but I'm not sure if it's a good deal and I have a few questions.

first the carfax report: http://www.carfax.com/cfm/FSBO.cfm?r...FX000006025709

2) The car has roughly 145k miles on it. It's a 1998 gtu with an aftermarket exhaust - pretty nice one, not crazy loud just nice. Seems to me like the tranny and everything is fine. The inside of the car is absolutely amazing very clean and it looks great. There's some paint ruboff and dent on the rear right panel by the taillights but that's not bad.

So, here is the problem, the cars "got 145k"miles on it but it seems to run pretty good. I'm wondering if it has a new engine or not. Is there a way to tell or anything i can do to check it to see? I'm also wondering if it's a good buy for 2000 dollars.

As far as I can tell, after test driving the car, and having a good friend look at it it's really an iffy type thing that mainly depends on the engine. Any feedback would really help me in this purchase and I thank you all.

btw, on the carfax report. it says there is an odometer error. That was just a problem with the guys at the dealer putting down the wrong mileage in the selling slip to the new owner. I checked it out and it looks fine.

are you sure about this odometer thing?

1) The records say that between 2000 and 2004 only 10,000 miles were put on the car. This is a possibility.

2) There is NO record of the dealer selling the Vehicle or a title issued from the dealer or inspections or anything between 87 and 92.

3.) Is this from a dealer asking only $2000? Dealers almost always have their heads up their asses about this stuff and ask just above Kelly Blue Book.

If the dealer is close in Va I could look at the car and tell you what I think.

my friend bought it from the dealer, and he is going to sell it to me so he can get a 240sx. I'm fairly sure that in looking at the report the error was by the dealer in saying the odometer had 144k miles on it. I have the receipt here of my friend's purchase and it clearly states that it's at 144000.

The dealer was in VA, it was the sports car center public auction in Manassas. He didn't buy it at auction it was a set price.

I live in VA but I'm heading back down to school on sunday. I just bought a compression guage from the store and we're gonna check the compression tonight and I'll post the info on this board when I get that. probably around 9 or 10est.

I'm not really sure what could explain it not being driven much between 2000 and 2004 but that's what it says so I have no idea. Thanks for replying and I hope to hear from ya.

Also, if anyone has or knows where to find a good how-to on performing a compression test on a 1988 rx7 I'd be very thankful. I been reading and it just seems like you plug this guage into the spark plug hole but what the hell do I know.

I'm looking for that detailed infor myself. It's alittle more complicated than that. Engine should be operating temp. Warm it up to 1/4 on the temp gauge. The compression tester goes in the leading spark plug hole. Also there is a special tester for rotaries. I need to know what a regular compression tester should say for our NA 13B's???

I just went out and bought a compression tester for a regular car figure it'll work and tell me at least partially of what I need to know. It was only 40 bucks and I'll probably just take it back tommorow after I've tested.

Just remove the schrader valve or hold it open during the test so each pulse can vent off and you can see 3 separate pressure peaks as the rotor turns.

hahahaha, I'd do that but the urge to get a rotary is just too strong and I don't think it can be held any longer. I'll save up after I first get into it. I need a car to learn how to work on them as well before I upgrade to the TII. but believe me..... I'd love to get a TII.

Well, for info... We did a compression check on the engine tonight. these are the numbers.

front rotor: 8kPa, between 7-8kPa on each face
rear rotor: 6.5kPa, between 6-7 kPa on each face

thanks
