Burnt right out...

Damn, this can't be good. Today I was looking for my EGR valve and was gonna remove it and block it off, but then I realized that its underneath the manifold, as in I'll have to take off the throttle body and intake manifold before I can get to it... I'll save that for the day I need to clean the injectors..

First off, my car

87 rx7 GX n/a

Second, what I saw

Near the 5th and 6th port actuators theres another 'device' right in the middle of them. It has an air hose going to it from the pump, and if im not mistaken, it looks like a coolant hose as well that runs to the underneath of the engine... heres a pic of it.

As I was looking closely to where one of the set of electrical wires connects, I noticed something strange..

The next picture highlights the wires that lead to a terminal that is completley burnt off on the device! I touched the terminal with my finger and it 'disentigrated' into charcol! the wires are now just hanging there, doing nothing....

So the questions:

1) What is this device?
2) Why is that terminal burnt off?
3) By not having this device functioning, what are some possible problems that can happen...

thank you.

Lol, another port air solenoid bites the dust

Make sure none of the wiring can hit ground now, leave the solenoid on the ACV so you won't have air leaks, you don't need the port air solenoid anymore anyway, no big loss, except for the fact some have been known to take the ECU with them when they go...

So what does it do? how does it just burn out like that?

Should I disconnect the two wiring harness's that lead to it?

I can't remove it, not without taking the engine out, I can't see where any of the bolts underneath of it go...

thx wayne, **** you know so much about the seven.. your a wicked contribution to these forums.

Don't ask me- it's not supposed to have any voltage going to it after 20,000 miles...Don't know why they fry, just know that you're not the first...BTW- I can't tell from the pics, it is the forward solenoid thingy on the air control valve, right? There should be one at the back with the same type wiring going to it- that's your split air solenoid, which controls (along with the switching valve) the air to your cats...

Yes, disconnect the wiring, cut it, whatever, just make sure that the black/white wire doesn't hit a ground (tape it up). Just leave the solenoid thingy on the ACV after you've removed the wiring...

Which one burnt??? The back one on the ACV is for the cats, the front one injected a little port air directly into the exhaust when the car was new...

I dunno, the one on the left??!?

There are two terminals in that picture, the one on the left was completley fried, the one on the right was fine, so I left it connected. Once agian, its just above the 5th and sixth port actuators right in the middle.

Either way it sounds like the unit is only for emissions control.. if anything, that its disconnected.. its one less thing to worry about on the rotary imo.

On the left would be your split-air solenoid, and that's strange, because it's usually the port air solenoid that fries...Oh well, same answer, if you don't have cats, you don't need it...Just make sure the live wires get taped up

why after 20,000 Miles?
is it some sort of 20k engine brake in device that deactivates after that amount of time?

20K mile switch in the gauge cluster is "supposed" to deactivate the port air solenoid after 20K miles via a signal to the ECU, The solenoid was for emissions, I guess...
