burning coolant

i got a problem, coolant is coming outta my mufflers upon startup, did a pressure test and theres no leaks, also coolant is not being sucked from the reservoir. and my car will over heat if sitting in traffic for half hour but will cool down when moving again....how is coolant getting into my combustion chamber if there is no leak detected??

If you're leaking coolant, the engine will (among other things) try to blow the coolant out of the system (not draw it out of the resevoir.) Start your car with the rad cap off. If coolant blasts everywhere, you're in trouble.

Overheating in traffic? If trying the above didn't blast coolant everywhere, my first guesses would be...

a) your fan isn't working properly. Check the belt, belt tension, or consider replacing it with an electric one (people have been saying good things about the fans out of '94 Fieros.)

b) coolant level is too low. Yeah, I know, this goes back to your original prob. But maybe not. Or not quite. Meaning maybe you didn't refill your coolant properly the last time you changed it (assuming it was you) and there's air in the system. And have you added Red's Water Wetter to the coolant mix? It's great stuff.

Hope that helps a little...

If coolant is getting into your exhaust system, then there is a leak somewhere...do the all-mighty "starting-engine-with-rad-cap-off" test as Amur mentioned. If you see bubbles, then start saving money Compression testing the engine will not show any coolant leaks...

If you look in the resevoir when the car is on and warm, does it bubble?? lift the coolant return hose out of the resevoir, and check if any gas is coming out of it. If there is, and it smells like exhaust, you've blown your water jackets. I had this very problem with my car. The water jackets around one of the housings were blown because a notch off the cooling cavity was cracked off, or corroded off. (very thin peice of metal, easily broken).... I ended up getting a rebuild w/new apex seals, clutch, full cleaning of the intake... etc etc... cost me $2000 CDN... But now that i've done that, i know that my car will last me a long time with proper maintenance.
