Buddies 90 vert. rx7 is not wanting to run???

Ok well the car is a 1990 convertible. Well he just got the car for free LOL but the car runs but its like the car doesn't want to rev up, and it will not hold a steady idle?? It idles at like 3000 for a second then drops down to 2500 then back up to 3000 over and over again. Also the car will not start with the key he has to roll start it, I was thinking a fuel filter is the problem or something to do with fuel. But i don't know much bout these cars so i thought i would post this here and see if maybe you guys could help me and my friend out.
Thanks in advance

Check the grounds.

Check the battery, battery cables. Check for vacuum leaks. Might as well check the starter too.

Ya we checked all over for vaccum leaks but didnt find any. The car will turn over with the key but it just wont start just keep turning over and over. But when we roll start it it will run but its like a 90cc 4 wheeler.

high idle and really lumpy sounds like vacuum leaks with a bit of electrical problems to me.

Well we didnt see any but ofcourse you can look over them. Any possible i deas of where one might be, it looked like their were vacuum lines everywhere. Also i checked out the website on post number 2 about the grounds, does it sound like a ground would make this sort of problem?

Check the ground on the starter and the solenoid.

if it runs liks its sputtering check your compression. on the starter problem is it a strong turn or does it hesitate? if its strong check your coil, plugs things of that nature. if not replace the batt.

O ya the starter works great turns the motor over very quickly but just turns and turns but really never starts. The battery is great also bc we pulled it out of his good car so thats not the problem, i checked the coils and plug wires and they were not burnt or anything and they looked pretty good. This is weird, i told him to take it up to the mazda dealereship and get them to read the ecu and check for what codes the engine is throwing.
