Bubbles in coolant check for bad water seals help.........

Does this method for checking if you fried your cooland seals work with S5's? Sicne there is no flow of water through the filler cap area like the S4s. Or should it just gush out coolant from the cap while running?

May have killed my engine for the first time.

Well I removed the cap from my filler neck on the GTU. I then topped it off to make sure it was full. I turned on the engine and let it idle for a while. I observed the water/coolant level raise and then bubbles came forth and the level would drop a bit but then return to its level before it would then do it again, raise then bubbles(not many maybe 10) and drop then a repetition. Is this indicatory of failed coolant seals? It didn't gush up even though it reached the normal range on the water temp. guage. What do you all think?

Well I had a small problem yesterday with the hose behind the TB but then today as I drove home it began to overheat again. I checked for leaks but nothing was leaking. I was missing a shitload of coolant but that may have been me forgetting to fill it up after replacing the hose.

Just top up that coolant and wait. If something's wrong you'll spot it soon enough...

I don't think it's bubbles that are a problem...if you start the car with the rad cap off and water BLOWS out from the rad cap, that is where yuo have a problem.

Too me this just sounds like the thermostat opening and closing. There will be a slight fluctuation in coolant level when this occurs...

So far she hasn't gone above the normal range. I hope she doesn't heat up again.

Yeah, I'm such a ***** - holding back with my x-ray vision that can see through steel across across hundreds of miles and not telling him whether or not those seals are okay...

this cold help you with the detecting leaks prob. their is a certain dye that you can put in the coolant that when it leaks it can leave a stain or mark on the area. since this is a rotary chances are if you have a leak , as soon as the coolant exits the leak point it is instantly evaporated thus you can't detect it, the dye will leave a mark at or near the leak. also it's a better idea to get the cooling system pressure tested that can also help determine where the leak as well. while some pumpes the pressure test have a second person look around the engine to see if any leaks are happening. (a trained mechanic would already know how to do this, so you would have tell them.) also I think some one might have built their own pressure tester. do a search and see what pops up.

my 2 cents

The kind of leak that he is worried about is internal (from the coolant passages into the chambers.) Such a dye would not help.
