Brand spankin' new Mazda 13b's.
I was just talking to a guy with a TII.. came into my bar.
He has a *MINT* bone stock TII, an 89- looks brand new, no lie.
Anyways, he had just replaced the engine about a year ago, and he said it was a BRAND NEW engine, shipped over from Japan. Not a rebuild, not used, not J-spec, but BRAND NEW, as in 0 miles!
Anyways, I was wondering why anyone would go to such lengths, but he said it was only about 200 bucks more than a Mazda reman!! The only
drawback was that he had to wait 6 weeks.
This is news to me... anyone else suprised? If you can wait 6 weeks, a brand new engine is obviously better than a rebuild..
If anyone wants, I am sure I could find out more info.

well paying that much, you probably will be able to get a j-spec engine, open it up, port it and rebuild it good, maybe even blue-print it.
But still it's good to know you can get a brand spanking new engine.

i was under the impression that if you go to mazda and say..."i want new housings, rotors, e-shaft, seals, etc".......that they can get them...and then build it for ya. so basically thats a brand new motor. but i don't think they have brand new "crate" motors lying around...but i could be wrong

Ya, that was my impression, but apparently, they DO have "Crate motors" fully assembled, just as they would be waiting on the assembly line to go into the rx-7... I don't kow if they are "new old stock", a dwindling stockpile, or if they are still actually making them in Japan... I'm going to try and find out..
A ported J-spec for the same price would perform better, but if you are NOT planning on taking this motor apart as soon as you got it, it would LAST LONGER than almost any rebuild. The reason for this is-
#1- Brand new parts of course-
#2- When they are assembled, they are evacuated in a vacuum chamber!! This sets all the seals and gaskets better than any engine builder can do. Thats why new engines last longer than the rebuilds.

This is true.
This is true. When I worked for a Mazda dealership (few years back 1994), they did replace "problem" engines with new crated engines. The only time that I can remember the motors being fully replaced with a new motor was when the Mazda Rotary Certified Mechanic could not figure out the problem with the original motor. Anyway, I know that was like 8 years ago, but I am sure they still have crated motors in Japan. You should see them when they arrived off the truck, nicely crated, plastic wraped, and clean as a whistle! Basically I saw about 4 or 5 89-91's replaced under the warranty. I assume you could buy one though it would be more expensive than an aftermarket rebuild. After all, none of us would go to our local Mazda dealership for a rebuild.

There was a rumor floating around that Mazda had a stockpile of NEW 13B engines in some warehouse.  Welp, it turned out to be true.  A few years ago, you could actually order a brand new engine.  I don't think you can get your hands on one now though...

Ya mazda dealerships have never been authorized to actualu open a rotary up. NEVER in the existence, it jsut because they don't know what they are doing. Stay away from the dealerships....
