brand new S5 motor
You dont know how long it was sitting? I was under the impression that rotarys didnt tolerate long absences well. Hope none of the seals are dried up etc... Congrats on a wicked deal!
Cool find though.
Once they've been run its not the greatest. But sitting in an aseembled and not-run state they are more durable against the effects of time since they are so utterly covererd in assembly lube/vaseline/what-have-you.
Very Interesting ... That plastic crate brings back a few memories. Williams Technologies in Summerville, SC used to do the Mazda Reman work and when I worked @ Fedex we used to pick up (for shipment to Mazda Dealerships) about 5-8 per week ... many rotoaries. I used to open up the crates, jus to see if I could identify which generation engine it was ... I even asked several times about going to work for them part time, but they did not seem interested ...
I'm just outside of Gettysburg and would be interested in the shipping crate. I race a 90 RX7 in E Production with SCCA and have occasion to ship a motor to my engine builder in Topeka, Ks. so it would be nice to have a proper crate.
Thanks,
Don

awesome buy! I would seriously take it easy the first 5K miles. I was reading a review (back when the car was new) and it said that they mashed on it from day 1 and after 50K miles they dynoed it and lost a tad hp top end but had better low end.
that's what they claimed. IF you take it easy from day 1 it will most likely last longer especially if you tune your microtech to the right AFRs and timing.

should be the first several pages. Either way do what you want. Remember, what you do from early childhood (new motor) will affect adolescence(70K to 100K miles) and the overall length of survival (150K+ miles)
well, damn. I can' think of a better motor to make 400HP out of. With the right fuel tuning, timing split, cooling and CARE ( doing a check every time you go and mash around) I don't see how it won't last long. You're way past my scope of knowledge once you hit 400 hp though. I don't know a damn thing about longevity or the amount of damage that amount of power/boost can cause.
well im gonna try to take really good care of this motor..everything that is going on externaly is new also..new koyo rad new injectors and fuel lines flushed oil cooler ect. ect.
you lucky bastard, you got one of the best deals I've ever seen. Mazda wanted close to $10K (way overinflated even though it included install and I think they meant remanufactured too) when I asked about a NEW motor several years ago.
