At first i thought it was my brake master and then realized no pressure was relieved from my brakes at all. My car has been sitting for 6 months and i cannot pump the brake pedal at all. I replaced the pads, bled everything, checked the booster check valve for crud prior to the car sitting. This tells me the pistons are LOCKED in the "out" position. I was able to turn them to slide them with the pads onto the rotor so why is this happening?

New caliper time?

And you fixed it how? New calipers i assume?

 

Remove the cap from your MC reservoir and cover with a rag.
Unbolt a caliper from the spindle and remove the pads.
Using a c-clamp, try to compress a caliper piston. Try all four pistons.
If they won't budge, place some tubing over the bleed screw and loosen it.
Try to compress the pistons again.

Now you know whether or not the calipers are frozen.

I'd guess the most likely culprit is the MC.

 

I was very lucky.

I had one piston out of 4 sticky on each caliper in the front when I replacement my pads.

Took me a bit, but I got them free. I used a C-clamp and they wouldn't budge. I pumped the pedal out and reapplied the clamp and they would stick at the same place. Tells me they just had sludge in them. After extending and retracting each stuck caliper about 5-6 times, they became free and I haven't had any issues since. This was directly after replacing the MC bleeding them.

I bled them again afterward.

The guy who owned the car before me was good about changing the oil (he had all the receipts) but the brake fluid looked 20yrs old and was black.

 

Good info in this thread. It's been warm but raining all week. Not to mention i slammed my thumb in the car door friday during my high speed work break.

I will go ahead and try to fix the problem next weekend. Sure as hell beats buying 4 new calipers if i dont need to. Even though it will cost me about $180 for a set of four with my cores at advanced auto. 5 minutes walking distance from my house.

I suspect the master cylinder is original equipment and needs to be replaced anyway so i'll for sure get that done.

Again, if my calipers were FROZEN, i wouldn't have been able to twist the pistons in to install my brand new pads, would i? The pistons moved and i did it with some small handled weaksauce needle nose pliers. I did all 4 calipers and bled the system in under an hour by myself.

Yeah, the fluid in my bmc was ugly nasty. I bled the entire system until clear fluid came out of each caliper and then bled some more. I wanted all remnants of that sludge out of my system.

Thanks guys and I hope i can get this fixed. They felt like they were faded bad driving the car when i brought it home after my trade. After a while they stopped working all together. I switched pads and could stop ok twice and after that, this problem came up.
