Brakes didn't work
okay, so it was WAAY cold with a big wind chill the other evening and I parked my car for about 45 minutes. I come out of the restaurant and start my car. I head down the road slowly because it is almost white out conditions. I hit the brakes because i thought i saw brake lights in front of me...nothing happened. I thought i was sliding...but no, the brake pedal was hard like it normally is, but there was no braking action. I wondered if maybe some was got in the brake lines and froze because after pumping the pedal about 7 times, the brakes worked perfectly again. Has anyone else has this same experience?
One possibility was that the blowing snow melted on the rotors and pads, saturating them, as if you drove through water. It took a few applications before they dried. Second-I've never had it happen with disc brakes, but possibly the snow could have melted then turned to ice on the calipers, not allowing movement of pads. I've had it happen with drum brakes and needed to use a torpedo heater on them before I could even move the car.
Nothing could have happened inside the brake lines.
Just a couple thoughts.
