Brake replacement questions

I am in the process of installing new rotors, pads and calipers on an 88 TII. I have everything installed, but I have a couple of questions before I bleed the system.

1. In the FSM it lists "Guard Plates" (page 11-31) that are to be installed between the caliper and the knuckle. When I took the brakes off my car these were not installed. Am I missing something important here? Anyone left these off?

2. Also in the FSM there is only one pad spring shown, but when I took off the brakes from my car, there were two pad springs installed. In the rebuilt caliper's "install kit" there was only only one spring. Should I be using one spring or two?

3. After getting everything tightened up, there is a slight contact between the pads and the rotor. The hub still spins easily, but I can hear some grinding. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Colin

1. I have always used these, but I doubt that not having them is going to put you into life threatening position.

2. The front brakes use two springs. I have driven with one spring to no ill effect.

3. Normal.

1.The "guard plates" are very thin steel pieces- almost shims- that are almost always missing in my experience.
The only function I can see for them is to prevent corrosion between the two mating aluminum faces.
