Question BOV & Boost controller questions? Price Vs. Gain

Okay I have decided that I need an upgraded BOV & I think I might add a boost controller. Now a HSK, Greedy, Apexi, all make nice BOV’s but they are in the $300 and up range. Turbo XS makes the H model (for 10PSI+) for $150? Why such a huge price margin? Is it a much lower quality BOV? What do I stand to loose my saving $150+ dollars?

Now to boost controllers. Same type of question, but what is the difference between a manual boost controller (cheap) and a digital/electronic boost controller? In terms of performance gains.

Thx a lot

The stock BOV works perfectly up to about 13psi, so unless you’re running over that, all you are buying is a very expensive noise. There are no performance benefits to replacing the stock BOV.

Electronic boost controllers are a classic case of the Law of Diminishing Returns! A properly set up adjustable bleed valve can work very well at raising max boost and cost very little if you source the parts yourself. But an EBC can also eliminate wastegate creep (NOT boost creep), which brings boost up quicker and earlier, resulting in more mid-range grunt. They also use closed-loop control so they hold set boost more accurately. That extra performance comes at a much higher price though!

If you can afford it, spend you money on the EBC instead of the BOV. You’ll need to spend some money on extra fuelling before you boost that high anyway.

It's a lot better comparison to be comparing just the "bare" BOV, versus the kits.&nbsp The TurboXS unit is a bare BOV with hoses to connect it to the engine.&nbsp The $300 "kits" from the Japan tuners come with adapter pipes that make the install basically drop-in.&nbsp Most of the Japan BOV's are in the $200 range; you'll still need a mount flange and get it welded to the rest of the intake to install it correctly.&nbsp You're paying the more money on the kits due to the custom adapter pipe.

Now to boost controllers. Same type of question, but what is the difference between a manual boost controller (cheap) and a digital/electronic boost controller? In terms of performance gains.
The EBC's have more consistent boost control.&nbsp Humidity, climate, ambient air temp all factor to change the boost levels with a MBC.&nbsp Most EBC's have a more aggressive boost "ramp" and usually allow the turbo to make power all the way to redline (up to the capacity of the turbo); an MBC cannot do this.

I had a Turbo XS RFL BOV for my TII and it sucked! It leaked like if the Hoover dam break open! To adjust it you have to un screw it and put in washers! HAHAHAHA It is sad.

Boost Controllers are like this, how I c it...EBCs are greaat they hold the boost you want through most all conditions. MBCs change if the temp drops or rises, or anything and to get them right where you want them is hard. You adjust it one way then it rains and get cool put and you forget to set it again u boost a lot then BOOM!

Spend the money now, So you don't have to buy a motor later.

What is a good (not off the wall priced) EBC? somthing that will do the job, but is not going to run me $600? Is there such a EBC?

Is the TurboXS-H without the kit "alot" harder to install than one with the kit? I did some searches and alot of people seem to use then, and they are sopsed to be quite loud.. that sounds like a good thing to me.

thx again

Does the apexi model do the fuzzy logic, self training thing? I know its a bit more expensive than what I am looking for .. but I hate being disapointed later. If I buy the best all it really costs me is time. more expensive parts= more paychecks till it starts.

Ya I plan to get the avc-r to go along with a s-afc in the future. I do have a guy wanting to sell me a Turbo XS BOV with everything to install it(was used 2 months) for $125. I am sure I could get him down to like $100 and/or have him install it. What do you think? Deal or no?

they are only $79 to buy new. I am not sure how many "add on" parts you need to install it .. but sounds pricey .. unless he will install it for $100 thats fair I would say.

If its a Type-S, and you're going to upgrade your turbo, pass on it. Mine was only any good on the stock turbo at 10-11 psi and below.

Now it can't keep up and I have to buy a higher end one to replace it.

Where can you buy the "S" for $79? I would like to tell him that if so. I saw it for $129 on www.turboxs.com If it is the "H" I will go for it I think if he puts it in. How could I tell them apart? On the website it looks as if the "S" is all purple and the "H" has some silver to it.

Duh! my appoligies. I was thinking the Manual boost controller, not the BOV. $129 is a good price for the BOV. I have seen it as low as $119 at modacar.com
