bought a used turbo (40k miles) with a few cracks in manifold

i just bought a used turbo with about 40k miles from von on this forum. there are small cracks int he manifold (2 noticable ones, one tiny one) will it be a big deal? i'll post some pictures tonight. turbo looks fine, no shaft play and no beat up wheels. does anyone think that these small cracks are of any concern?

i meant where it meets the manifold, tiny crack that goes across from one hole to the other

I think just about every cast manifold out there has a few cracks in them.
Usually they're superficial, but occasionally they go right through, and just require a little weld job- nothing major.

As for that exact location- very common. No real problem unless they are so large that you'd be robbing HP by diluting the pulse/scavengine effect.
If the crack was that large the manifold would be in pieces anyways. So, no. No problem.

Only problem (and i'm speaking from experience here) is if there are cracks on either flange (engine or turbo side). It will leak if there are cracks on the flanges. Mine leaks and it sounds like ****. Manifolds are about $200.00 from MComp. .

Crack on the outer most part of the casting will cause gasket failure in the long run but like the others said the ones in the middle wont bother much.

My buddy's 1988 10th an had 30k miles when he took his turbo off. we compaired his cracks to the cracks of my turbo at 143k miles. It was extremely wierd. All the cracks were in the same exact place. I mean, seriously. The cracks were just as bad on both turbos. We actually ended up using the housing with 142k miles because the wastegate was already ported!!!

Sorry Jacob. Hope its not a problem. I have absolutely no expierience in the turbo compartment. I recieved that turbo from someone after I sold my turbo to him 3 days after I bought it...So I only had 3 days of turbo11 expierience. I was told by the guy I recieved it from that it was fine. And he has a road racing turbo so I trust him. I do know that the play and rod is fine because thats what he showed me to prove it was still good. If the forum members say its fine then im sure its fine. If not let us know. thnx

I should mention that there is no pulse/scavange effect in the S4 turbo because it is not a divided manifold.
