Talking Bought my first RX-7

Wooo Hooo!

I picked up a '88 Vert w/ 91k miles.. it was sitting in a garage for the past year+. I picked it up in Seattle, WA and towed it with me here to Pennsylvania (just moved like 2 days ago) so it came from an area where they don't salt the roads

I had the rear diff rebuilt + flushed(I thought n/a didnt come LSD? this one is.. *shrug*), transmission rebuilt + flushed, new shift bushings, new coolant, spark plugs, oil change, ect + the 60 and 90k mile mazda services done. It is 100% stock with the exception of some rims/tires from previous owner and a mutilated stereo electrical system (my next project). It has a few quirks, like the windshield wipers only working on 1 setting and the dash lights don't want to stay on. She runs like a champ, I had a few rotary nuts look at it (im still learnin.. ) and they were impressed with its condition.. she had no problem getting sideways in 1st or 2nd at the track before I left.. but I plan on swapping in a T2 motor over the summer.

Here are a couple quick pics, she is dirty as hell from being towed 3000 miles.. and i hit a tire tread that kicked back and knocked out my little fake light thingy on the bumper (what are they anyways?)

I've heard of some people not having running lights under the headlights.

Mine has it

Those "fake light thingies" are called FTP lenses, for Flash To Pass. They are designed, on the USDM models, to be able to flash the headlights of the car without raising them during daytime driving.

Windshield wiper thing is common- the relays in them tend to fail and need to be replaced. There is a writeup on how to do it, otherwise PM icemark- he used to sell refurbished ones.

Wash that thing! I hope you didn't tow it with the top down like that

Enjoy, and take care of it. Nice find. As for the rear end, my 88 came with an open diff- but I have since replaced it with a turbo model clutch type diff.

Ah, the FTP makes sense.. I have seen some interesting conversions to them for different lights that I will probably persue (or the stock parking light look).

Oh, I washed it already! I just took those pictures about 5 minutes after unloading her from the trailer.

Thanks, and I will definitely take care of her.. my wife is already jealous of the attention. I intend on basically returning it to stock/OEM with a Turbo II 10th AE engine/driveline/suspension/badging swap.

It was actually just painted, I'll throw some pictures up tomorrow of her all clean.. she had almost a foot of snow on her from getting towed through about 6 different mountain passes and then dirt from all the country land roads and then it melted away and left that uglyness.

Plans for her within the next few weeks are to swap out door (panels) to S5 'vert, relocate battery, fix the stereo wiring and try to hunt down a S5 stock cd player system, new suspension + brakes, S5 tail lights, pull the A/C, and put a freakin switch to the fuel so I can stop popping the hood when she floods!!

This summer I am going to put a new top on her (current one is fading and will probably start leaking by the end of this next winter), swap out engine for S5 T2, T2 Hood, and look into a body kit i saw that looked nice (think it was called GP sports?.. not sure if it will fit on verts) and get some staggered wheels. I also am going to look into some brighter headlights and doing something about these FTP lenses.

Other than that, shes staying towards the stock side.. Just trying to build a clean RX7 hoping for 300hp to the wheels someday and nothing more really.

Tow Cost was ~$1350 for a U-Haul, $325 for a car trailer, ~$1050 gas, ~$200 hotel and food.. Made it in 2.5 days. Lucky for me the government pays for all of that.. and more.
