bought my first FC

Hey there. Just saying hi to everyone. Yesterday I picked up my first Second Gen. Last year I had picked up a first gen ( 83 ) and have since sold that one, don't ask why because I really liked that car just didn't love it. I really wanted a Second Gen for a while, before I picked up my first rx7.

I bought a blue 86 gxl. The sunroof was rusted and leaking so the previous owner got a new one from the junk yard and sealed it in, to make it worse it is white. Does anyone know how to get it working again? Of course I'll remove the glue or sealent he used but I'm stuck after that.

The centerconsole is cracked, and there's no radio either. Right now its just a giant hole from under the Ac controls to pretty much the shifter. Other then that and some faded paint the car is good so far. Its all stock just got a new stock exhaust, belts, oil, and some other things as well.

I have noticed that not many people or not that I've seen anyway, have blue rx7's. Mostly white black and red, some of the other colors pop up too but hardly blue? I admit though black and white look great.

Thanks in advance as I'm sure I'll be posting and asking a lot and I'll be sure to post pictures up ASAP

There have been a lot of discussions about the subject of sunroof repair/rebuilding. Here's a decent thread to get you started, but if you do a search, you'll find many more:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/removal-repair-sunroof-411947/

Also, if you haven't already done so, the Mazda Factory Shop Manual (FSM) for your particular year RX-7 is downloadable from links in the Second Gen FAQ at the top of this page. Here's a link:

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-faq-fc-494667/

The FSM has a pretty thorough section on removing your sunroof mechanism. Good luck!

thank you very much.
the thing is I am a little confused. The guy like super glued or silicones in the new roof, how do I go about removing that. Its all clear and looks like a silicone base glue or something.

Also, since do you think the new sunroof is usable if I find a way to get it unglued? If there is a way. He said it leaked so thats why he did all that. I guess I will just have to find a full day to rip it apart and figure out why its leaking, if it still even leaks with the new roof. The old was rusted hence the leak, so the new one is clean hopefully no more leak?

Thanks for the links though, Ill be sure to read through them and post in there.

You can remove the silicone (most probably what was used) using a sharp tool to pick at it from the center and then peel it off once you have enough out to pull on. You'll have to remove the headliner, with a few trim pieces before that (and rearview mirror/map lights, etc.). Then you can investigate why it was leaking. You'll see there is a large tray around the sunroof opening to catch water, with four drain holes at the corners and clear drain tubes which send the water to the bottom. You want to make sure this drain water actually escapes out the body. It could be leaking because of blocked tray or tube drains. Look in the hatch area near the back corners where the glass seal is and you get the idea. The sunroof has the same deal.

edit: Welcome to the club!
