boost sucking intake shut
ok, this isn't so much of a question as it is a warning. Following is a story of a stupid-*** guy who decided to build a Turbo Inlet Duct with the wrong materials.
So I went to Home Depot and picked up all the fittings to make a TID for my 87TII. I got a 3"-2" Reducer, a couple PVC fittings, and a 2" 45° angle (which ended up being 90° once I got home and looked at it). So I hooked it up with the 90° angle from the turbo, then a 45° PVC connector, then the 2"-3" reducer to the MAF. Custom flange, then K&N filter at the end.
Once I took the car out, I saw about 11psi in 3rd gear (was seeing around 8psi previously). I took it out again and it would build up to 7-8psi and start feeling like ***. Didn't know what was wrong. I realized that the 90° bend was restricted and under boost (vaccum in the TID), it was actually shutting off the TID almot totally.
Tonight I'm going to Home Depot to pick up some PVC fittings and run a diameter of 3" instead of the mostly 2" I have now.
Moral:
Don't use hoses made for pressure when working with vaccum and ALWAYS try to overdesign instead of going with the cheap, easy way out.
Sorry about the rant, just had to let you guys know what a dumbass I was.
