bonez racepipe
im deciding to whether or not get the bonez superflow racepipe or not and i have a 88 n/a. anyone here have this and can tell me what kidna gains that they got from this. should i just goto a local muffler shop and have them weld a completly straight pipe from the manifold/header down to the y-pipe? would this do the same thing but just for a cheaper price? i have 2 performance mufflers on the back and was wondering if i just had all straight pipe with no presilencer or anything that the backpressure would be horribly nasty or would it be alright? also, does backpressure mess up your engine in any way?
and would the actuators still work?

With a perfectly straight pipe from the headers back, the 5th and 6th ports wont open properly since they rely on backpressure. you would actually be loosing a few horsepower on the top end because of this. A solution is to convert the actuators to open electronically at a particular rpm, like those on the 89-91 N/A's. I read a How-To on this, but i dont recall the URL.
The Bonez pipe would be a better choice if you are concerned about noise, but an exhaust shop would be a great cheap solution. Just make sure it's stainless steel. prepare for the chainsaw sound

I have the bonez pipe on mine. It only takes around 30 minutes to install yourself. It may be hard to find a local shop that will install a straight pipe, since it's illegal to remove your cats. I left the 6p's alone, and i noticed a significant improvement in lower power; not so much in the upper. Later, I tied them open. I lost a bit of low end, but gained a fair amount up top.
It's only 150$, and it's easily "undoable" if you ever need to sell your car.

Yo,
I've had both the Bonez and the Racing Beat downpipe/presilencer on my GTUs. My advice: Spend the extra money and get the Racing Beat downpipe and presilencer. The reason? The Bonez has a HUGE crimp where it is bent upwards to attach to the manifold. It is NOT mandrel bent, it is just muffler shop bent, which mean there is definitely some flow restriction there. Not to diss my homies at RX-7.com, I still love ya Rocky! *grin* But since I've had both on my car, I did notice a difference in the top end with the RB. Here it is:

Is it worth twice as much? That's up to you. I had the Bonez on for about 2 years, and it showed no signs of rust or other problems. It didn't make it too loud, and made definite power increases. The Racing Beat is a whole different beast, all polished stainless, with it's two peice construction that will let you go to headers in the future, if you want. Phew! Hope that helps.
