blue smoke only after boost?

Just got my t2 motor into my 88 gtu, and everything is good, EXCEPT blue smoke spews out of the back of my car. But not all the time.

I just got my boost gauge so I am now able to tell when I am in boost or not. It only happends when I am over 4000 rpm, and at 5 psi boost, and most the time only AFTER I let go of the gas to shift or slow down. Happens in each gear, at any speed. Worse the higher RPM I go, but not longer I hold the boost. It doesnt smoke if I hold it at 5500 RPM, not until I let go of gas to shift.

Would it help at all to upload a video or anything? Im going to do some testing tonight with the boost gauge, but a few of my local friends think it might be turbo oil blow by and that I need to get a $35 greddy rebuild kit off ebay. Could it be something else like my oil catch can hoses? Right now I have nothing coming off the oil fill necks, they arnt capped, but they are just sitting there open.

Anyways, Im going to go fill it up with oil again, and take it out for some more tests.

Thanks for any help.

Opps, I have the TOP nipple capped, but the bottom one on the oil fill neck just has a hose on it going to nothing. It does have a little bit of oil spray coming out of it randomly.

*update*
Got a friend (natrual smooth) that is going to let me throw on his spare turbo to see if that fixes it. I will post my findings. Going to suck taking the turbo off/on with the engine IN the car. *args*

Thanks I hope so to! But I have some updates. I DONT think its my turbo any more unless it something complex that I dont know about.

Here is the update. IT DOESNT depend on boost. I depends on RPM. It doesn't smoke in or out of boost below 3800 RPM. It DOES smoke in/out of boost over 3800 RPM.

The only thing that I know of that changes at 3800 RPM is the secondary injectors kick in. I have power all the way to 6500 RPM so It has to be getting the correct fuel, and the smoke is WHITE with a hint of blue. It doesn't smell sweet so I really dont think its water / coolant.

Other than the fuel change, what changes at 3500-4000 rpm? Is there more pressure on the oil system? Currently I cant figure out if I should cap the nipple at the bottom of my oil fill neck, or run it to something else. Oil spray IS coming out of that pipe, but I dont know if its happening at 3800 rpm and that pipe should be capped or what. I think it was part of the rats nest and went to a little black thing that obviously isnt there any more.

I will have to compare my car w/ my friends car that kept emissions tomorrow. (Unless someone has a picture of the driver side engine rats nest s4 t2)

Thanks.

128k no I dont think it was rebuilt but it is quite strong, 85 compression for its age. I think it has a lot of life left in it.

It could have 85 compression and still have dying oil control rings. Thats what it sounds like to me mang....

buy why only after 3800 rpm, not 3600 not 3000. I can hold those all day, if bring it up to 4000 I law down a smoke screen.

Well.. at 3800, your secondary fuel injectors kick in... Could just be the extra power sucking the fuel out.

Is it any rpm upwards of 3800?

well what prolly happens is you have more bypass form your apex seals above 3500 rpm. that nipple you capped is more or less your PCV. uncap it and run some hose with a TEE inline with a filter . and run the other part of the tee to the oil fill neck.... with the lower compression you could just be building up pressure in your crank case only haveing one breather and pushing oil by the control rings....

lol. Yeah. could be the PCV... I didn't read the part about you capping a nipple... Usually I can pick out the word "nipple" in any text... but, it slipped by me this time. Heh.

Ok here are a few pictures, the first one the tube curls around and plugs into the bottom of the neck. I looks as thought it has been spewing oil like fluid (maybe just spray) onto that intercooler pipe.

I connected the hose coming from the bottom of the oil feed neck to the hose coming off the driverside firewall (5th picture) (that goes to the black can) and it didnt make a difference. I pulled the plug off the top of the oil fill neck and it didn't seem to change, also I took the cap off the oil fill neck and that didnt do anything. haha I don't know what else to do. Someone throw some ideas at me so I Can start doing tests.

How important is the circled hose in the picture? Currently I have it capped at the intake side, and dont have a T before the charcoal canister.

What about the purge control valve? Are these things only needed if I havnt removed the rats nest? I dont even have a PCV on there at all.... (confused) lol

Thanks.

I don't have the orange solenoid valve (PCR) on my secondary fuel rail pressure regulator. Do I need that???? (I think this might be my issue!)

Args, currently I have the purple line coming off the bottom of the neck going to the blue line thats going to the charcoal canister. Im going to fix that tomorrow when there is more light out.

The symptoms you describe are classic for failing oil control rings. My TII did EXACTLY the same thing. It is currently being rebuilt and he found that the oil control rings were wasted.

Its a turbo seven....they smoke Mine smokes alot but I dont really care. Its probably just because the oil pressure goes up enough at 3800 that the oil control rings cant hold anymore.
