Blown? Something else?

So a new member of the forum was having issues with a very clean 87 Turbo. I stopped by his house today to give him a hand.

Situation...he was driving down the Interstate and heard a very loud pop and shudder. He pulled the car to the side of the road and it was running until he took it out of gear. He was eventually able to get it home where he as unable to get it started again despite de-flooding procedures.

What I checked personally. Engine is at 120k according to the odometer but when we pulled the plugs, there were very high, even pssht sounds on all faces of the rotors. I did not have my gauges with me to check actual compression.

When removing the EGI to de-flood, you can smell the gas burning off...and the engine is right on the verge of wanting to crank but will not. Also, brand new spark plugs have wet fuel on them almost immediately.

Any thoughts apart from doing an actual compression test at this point in time?

going to need to do the compression test. the ghetto test is good for quick trouble shooting but sounds like it could be on the weak side. my Na had that problem. it was lower compression.

Since it was sudden not gradually getting worse over years, it sounds like it's fuel delivery system related but I'm too noob to know what it is.

Have you checked for spark? Because you said the plugs are wet...
