blowing 30/40 amp relays need help
ok i have a electric fan off of a ford tarus on my 89 tII. well i have a realy hooked up off of a keyed ignition so anytime my key is on so is the fan. well i have been having trouble with keeping relays, they keep goig out. is there a way i can run dual relays. or a relay out there that can handle this fan . also when i am on a long fairly steep grade my car will start to overheat with the fan on high. (i normally only need low if i go anywhere) i was wondering if it would help if i got a different thermostat (lower temp) or radiator. the current radiator is out of a 88 se, my tII sprung a leak so i had to change it. is the SE radiator have less cooling ??? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks

What do you mean by "blowing the relays"? The coils are frying, or the contacts are burning up? A 40A relay shouldn't be burning up with an e-fan, regardless...
Are you using it for a "holding" relay, for instance, the same circuit is used to energize the coil, and then feeds the contacts also?

Do you hear it "chattering" when energized?. When an e-fan (or any electric motor, for that matter) is first switched on, they draw MUCH more power than when at speed. If you're using the same circuit for the relay coil AND fan power through the contacts, when the fan is first energized, the relay coil loses enough voltage input to cause the contacts to chatter, or "buzz", which will burn them up sooner or later. Use a seperate power circuit for the coil, and don't load any particular circuit with more than 2 relays...

You need a 75 amp or larger relay with 8 gauge or larger wire with a 50 amp fuse to run that fan properly. I had this same problem with my taurus/sable fan. Its a good idea to run temp switch to it also, running that fan all the time caused mine to burn out and almost left me stranded at Rotorfest here in Jerzy. Oh and it might be a good idea to upgrade your alt. , buts thats if you get charging issues with the efan.

well i use a separate power for each part of the realy. is the SE radiator causing my overheating prob or is the radiator the same as the tII?

If that fan really has more than a 40amp draw I'd look into getting a different fan. Tell us exactly how you have it wired and what it is wired to, so there is no doubt that your wiring is the problem.

Like WAYNE88/NA said, its the draw from the motor when the Taurus first starts up that causes the problems.
Its a very hard pulling fan. Thats why I didn't want to give up on it. Now that I have it wired properly I haven't had a problem with it.

so is there any other way i can make my car run a little cooler. when i went up the steep grade in like 90 degree heat it overheats.. any ideas, thermostat, i know the fan is enough, radiator?????
