Blow-by when using synthetics and some other small questions.
Since switching to a 100:1 premix solution, I have noticed I get a bit more of a gassy odor from my motor oil (nothing near the point of the oil igniting under a flame). The engine shows strong compression and doesn't eat very much oil at all. Almost all my oil consumption is due to a small leak at the oil cooler crush washer (a drop or two a night adds up after 3000 miles, but isn't more then a half-quart right now).
With the stock system disabled, i have seriously considered switch to a decent synthetic but have never done the process before and had a few concerns.
For one, how do you go about initiating the switch? Do you just drain the old junk and fill it back up with synthetic, or do you have to go through a fancy (and probably expensive with synth prices) flush process?
As far as filters go, is there any special kind that needs to be used with synthetics, or will my normal choice of filter suffice? Also, what is the recommend change interval for our vehicles and synthetic fluids?
Of course, I should probably take care of my main question. With the blow-by I have been getting, will going synthetic cause any problems, or will it actually help elleviate the blow-by percentage because the gasses may not mix well with it?

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
Blow by should not be and issue with just about all better synthetics as they all burn at or under 450F (well below the average temp in the combustion temp).
You can just swap the oil, although note that it will take about 3 oil changes before you are 100% synthetic.

It'll be nice not having to muck with blow-by too, it's the one thing that I didn't like about pre-mixing when I switched.
I'm still wondering about the recommend change interval though, I currently change my oil and filter at 2,500 miles and thought synthetic went awhile longer between changes.
What kind of gains have other FC owners seen after switching? I'm expecting a mild MPG increase and cooler running, but it would be ncie to hear some field experience.

I'm going to go synth. on my next oil change so I can use up the rest of my case.
I've actually heard that the Walmart top synthetic is pretty damn good and cheap to boot, but that was from a group of people I don't know if I trust too much.
What is your guys' preferred brand?
