block off heater hose, not bypass

I forgot if it was bad to block off the heater hose instead of bypassing them? Did that help flow of water or anything?

My heater core is broken so I just capped off each end, the one at the radiator and the one at the block. I was thinking of bypassing them, but I threw away that metal tube that runs along the frame rail. Now I want it back. doh!
