blew my engine...YES :)

alright, well i was planning on selling my car. but we all know you cant get **** for n/a's. so the other day i started it up to move it before someone came to look at it i heard a nice clunk and it started smoking like a crackwhore. goodbye 186rwhp streetported motor. anyways i needed to pull the engine to make the car one color anyways. and we all know being n/a is only fun for so long (i just bought a turbo corrado). so i must start the work to be on the darkside. turbo swap (woot) i may be 16 but i know that in order to mod you must build a reliable problem free engine to have a good base. Q1) so should i get a jspec from somewhere and have it rebuilt or should i look into getting a blown one and having it rebuilt. i know jspecs are kinda hit or miss but it seems like most have a good housings and such they just need rebuild cause they've moer then likely sat forever. Q2) when all is said and done im gunna be aiming for around 260-300rwhp. now with that said is there anything thats easy to put in (reliability mod wise) while the engine is out then when its in? i wanna get my support stuff done first before i start messing with the boost. ie fuel, fmic, and such. Q3) whats the max hp a s5 turbo can push? id be alot easier to strap a new turbo on while i have the engine out then after i put it in. Q4) the tmic is only good up to 220hp right?

thats about all i can think of right now. anyone with experience in doing a t2 swap please gimme some advice. id love to hear it haha. TIA

thanks all,

Russ

I did buy blown and rebuild. I'm doing the rebuild myself and so far its a great experience. Its a good way to learn about the motor.

1. i wish i knew what all pieces fit from one motor to another; small pieces that are typically reused. i'd like to say that i would collect parts that i know are good (ie crank, rotors, irons and housings), but i'm not sure what small parts wouldnt work from your n/a motor. in which case, if i didnt have someone to talk to (luckily i do), i would probably invest in a cheap blown motor instead of buying a j-spec (which is sold to be a running motor). if youre rebuilding either way, might as well pay the price of a motor that is sold as needing a rebuild.
2. i cant think of "reliable" mods off the top of my head. rebuilding with as many new parts as possible, having it rebuilt by someone who does rebuilds, and tuning it intelligently are all "reliable" mods in a sense. i would definately run a standalone.
3. i think people have gotten the hp numbers youre shooting for from S5 turbos, but i'm not sure of their capacity. also, their age is important. you can get a Borg Warner off ebay for around $400, but it'd be good for about 100 more hp than what youre shooting for i believe.
4. i wouldnt listen to any idea that there's a max horsepower that an intercooler can handle. i know someone who, currently in their transition period, has a top mount and a 60-1 (or similar). his intake air temps are higher than normal, but nothing too worry about. i'm not sure what power he's pushing with this current setup, but i believe he's running a half bridge. i wouldn't push the car to the max with a top mount, but 220 sounds rediculously low for a "max" horsepower.
