Big man, small car.

hey all,
i'm 6'4 1/2 and 250lbs. with really broad shoulders. and coming from the american muscle school of junk, i've never really had to deal with headroom or interior space.

AND

i've done some searching on the forums and found that most of the tall people have some difficulties fitting in their FC. So i just picked my 90 project car up yesterday and when I sat in it i found that i could fit with the seat all the way back, and the rear bins removed. That being said, i'm not happy with that.

I can only reach the steering wheel so much that I look like i should be bumping a low-rider.

translation: this sucks

so, short of getting surgery, i've seen that some of you have reccomended sport seats, steering wheels, and steering wheel spacers.

So my question is: which brands of these things have you other tall folk had success with? I'm really trying to find out, what measurements in seats and steering wheels I should be looking for.

thanks in advance

most aftermarket seats will mount higher than the stock seats...you might be able to get some more room by making custom rails but it will be hard

You can bolt the seat to the floor. If thats not enough head room, you could always sell it and get a vert.

I made my own seat rails, and I only got a 2inch drop in the height when Im sitting in it.
It was a basic rail though, no sliding the seats. But I got rid of it since it couldnt take my weight going sideways...... :P

Im 6'1" and 245
I fit ok in the rx7 in the stock seats. Not good enough to heel toe properly (unless you can call it "heel and middle of foot" unless im barefooted then its proper heel toe.....) since the steering wheel doesnt tilt too much so my knees smacks against it when heel toeing.

I'm a little over 6'2, About 240, and I really like the way I fit in my S4. I'm not saying It's the most comfortable ride of all time, but I really like the way they designed the dash so your legs tuck way under and the steering wheel isn't a million miles away when you can comfortably reach the pedals. I've found that the most comfortable position for me is not having the seat slid all the way back, but having it up one notch from all the way, and leaning the chair back the rest of the way. That way you get more headroom and can sit more comfortably.

Everytime I see this post i just skip over it, but its been brought up so many times... Dude im 6'5" 220lbs... I fit in my car like a dream... I have had harder times fitting in larger cars. The only issue i did have was with the automatic belt on my s5. I also agree with Saavedro88, I bring my seat up a notch of two... cant remember exactly as i have been in China the last 2 months =P

You must have some screwed up body proportions, because I am 6'2 and I could really use some more leg room....

Anyway, the aftermarket seat depends on how it is mounted. It is sits on the adapters then it will raise the seat, but my seat mounts the brackets to the side so it actually sits lower. My dad is 6'7 and fits in my car, though the head room is a bit skimpy.

You can get a aftermarket steering wheel, hub adapter, and a hub spacer..

SHould help you out some. With an aftermarket steering wheel you can get a smaller diameter which might give you a little more comfort room as well. If you dont mind the "race car" look inside.

Actually, its not too bad. I used some plate steel to mount the seat to, then welded up some simple brackets. It sat MUCH lower than before. Now I can fit in there WITH a helmet, no more sticking out of the sunroof.

I'm 6'5'', 265lbs, and I fit like a glove in my FC. Don't ask me how... The seats kinda "hug" my *** perfectly, and with the seat all the way back it's actually comfortable to me.

Although I'm only 6'1"/200lbs. I had comfort issues in my RX.
Since there wasn't anything to be done about the sunroof, I tried two sets of stock seats and aftermarket steering wheels.

None of the seats fit me properly- I always felt like I was sitting atop the side bolsters and the back lumbar support (adjustable on one seat) was positioned wrong.
Finally solved the problem with a set of Honda CRX seats mounted with no adjustable rails.
The Honda seats are the most comfortable OEM seats I've ever sat in and even match the black interior perfectly.

With the seat lowered, I was able to go back to a stock size steering wheel (in my case, a unit from a FD) which made the steering better and I can again see the turn signal indicators.
Be aware that the stock FC/FD steering wheels are offset- the hub and rim are not concentric- which is a hard arrangement to find in an aftermarket wheel.

Finally, I machined down my shortshifter to lower the **** (and even further decrease the throw) which realigned my arm to the new seat height.

Basically, the ergonomics have been tailored to fit ME almost perfectly.
My niece hates it- she's the only other person I ever let drive the car and she no longer can- but she'll just have to get her own.

A recent 1000 mile blast from Denver to Chicago ( nonstop in 13.5 hours) confirmed the goodness of this setup...I was able to unfold my ancient back without pain at the end of the trip.
My wallet was screaming but I didn't expect the new seats to fix that problem...

This is really odd. I've got a base '86 and I'm 6'2", 245lbs (lol at fatty), and with my seat all the way back, I can't even press the clutch pedal all the way in. I have to sit one 'notch' forward from the back. I also like to sit more forward, and I have no problem with headroom ever.

Maybe it is a year specific thing or something??

i think it also depends on your arm and leg length.
in my 87 integra i sometimes find myself reaching for the steering wheel a little.
luckily that year tegra has a lot of head room so i just move the backrest up a notch or two.
given, on bumps and stuff i duck so i don't hit my head on the roof.
i'm 6'5" and about 180lbs, kinda skinny.
i have some issues with pretty much any car, especially the backseats of coups or hatchbacks.
one thing i thought was nice is the scion tc has much more head room in the back seats than most.

I am 6'2" and i fit in it quite nicely. The only complaint i have about it is the steering wheel. Something about it is just not right, too big, too close to the dash, something. But overall i fit like a dream in there, i am a skinny guy though.

I think I take the cake for height here, Im 6'8" and fit pretty decent in the FC. Head room is tight with a helmet, but is easily fixed by lowering the seat and moving it back a few inches.

I think on the FC it's not so much overall height as it it length of the torso and legs. I'm 6ft w/ a 29in inseam, which means I'm all torso. I'm just barely okay in a non sunroof car for comfortable driving. With a helmet on I can't rest my wrists on the steering wheel as is proper because I have to move the seat back a bit and lay it down to clear the helmet. Needless to say I've got to find a replacement seat for tracking the car full time.

I'm also curious if anyone has swapped in the adjustable height steering column out of a vert into a coupe to get a better position on the steering wheel?

Makes me feel good for being 5'10"

Anyways, if you're feeling the steering wheel is too far away you should get an aftermarket setup with a spacer (however it'll be harder to reach your turn signals).

If the steering wheel is too close to you, you'd want a hub + a flat steering wheel ONLY; some aftermarket wheels are offset as well ('deep dish' - like mine).

My setup is: hub + converter + deep dish wheel. Sticks out a bit further then the stocker, and took some getting used (have to reach for the signal stalks), but once that's done, it's beautiful. People compliment the setup all the time.

wow thanks for all the replies guys. I think i need to find a steering wheel spacer, i don't mind the "race" look in my car.

When I was looking though I heard someone talking about a bride seat bracket that sits on the side of the seats.

any info?

also i just measured my inseam and its a 32, i guess that explains why my knees keep hitting the steering wheel.

I believe those usually bolt up to the stock rails.

That's quite a large spacer, compared to mine:

It doesn't have to be a 'race/ricer' look, just get a tasteful wheel.

I dig that "deep dish" design, who makes that steering wheel, or steering wheels that have a similar shape?
