Big enough wastegate :)

i remember reading several posts about people having boost creep with ported wastegates. i was mearly stating that i don't have boost creep like the others are dealing with.

the wastegate has nothing to do with how much air the turbo can flow.
i understand what you're saying. i'm saying that the turbo could maintain whatever boost you wanted if the wastegate would start closing again. because, again, like i said, the stock s4 turbo can put out 20psi at redline on a streetported motor if the wastegate is closed. don't waste your time writing about how inefficient 20psi is. that's not what this thread is about.

BECAUSE THE WASTEGATE IS STILL OPEN!! the engine has past it's peak efficiency range. it's more difficult to keep the turbo spinning fast enough to keep up with RPMs. especially if a lot of exhaust energy is being thrown out the wastegate.

that's an interesting theory, i'll have to fab up an assistor(sp) spring to help close the wastegate and see if that will help for holding boost through redline.

actually, if you think about it, increasing the overall spring force acts like a completely new wastegate. with the addition of springs, the wastegate will open later as well as close sooner. giving you a more consistent boost level. if you could find the perfect spring for the boost you want, your boost curve would be nice and flat(like stock only higher). this would be ideal if you had a minimum boost level that you want to run. for instance if you wanted a "street" boost level you could find the correct spring for that. and use the boost controller for your "race" setting. however, the race boost level will still not hold boost at high rpms for the same reason it won't hold boost now but it won't dip below your new "street" setting.

i considered taking apart the stock actuator to see if i could shim the spring to increase boost. it's originally crimped together, but i figured i might be able to use a small v-band clamp and some silicone to re-assemble it. i might still try it one day. adding an external spring would have the same effect.

fstrnyou, you could weld your wastegate shut and the boost would still bleed off in the higher rpms and higher power levels.

yours maybe, but mine seemed to stay around 20psi all the way to redline when the wastegate never opened (2nd and 3rd gear). in 4th and 5th gear, there was enough load to build boost up to 26psi. thankfully i'm no longer in the habit of running soo much pressure.
