BIG Backfiering problem!!!

I have 87 N/A and every time I brake when gear is in my car starts to backfire like machine gun. It's really getting annoying
Can the problem be in exhaust ,mabye low backpressure, I have my cat thrown out and couple of little holes in mufflers?

Any advice?

thnx. LLman

just cut off your catalytics...that should help a lot...just don't do it if you can't get away with the emissions laws.

The acv, air control valve has a part in it called the anti-afterburn valve. I believe this might have something to do with the backfiring. I understand its function, the antiafterburn part of the acv, is to do just that.

Check ACV (air control valve), plug up all holes in exhaust, check cat for blockage, check TPS screw position or TPS operation voltage and check for fuel restrictions e.g. cloged injectors, filter lines etc. Back fire may be caused by lean condition.
